Went last year for a good time. :thumb: Only catch is motel is not easy to find since it's up above the road, but that way it's quieter and it's like you're all alone.
-
Few more years and me and the bride plan on moving out that way. Somewhere in AZ. NOT Phoenix.

Arizona is a big, beautiful state and you have many choices as where to live...northern Arizona (Coconino / Yavapai counties) suits me just fine! :thumb:  :1:

May 4th...... shucks!
I've already committed to stay around until then and do the Route 66 Fun Run with the Corvette gang. Maybe next year when my arm is better and I can ride again!

I plan on riding to Cottonwood and I live on Rte. 66. If I see a bunch of Corvettes (not unusual), what color is yours?

If the contracts keep coming, I'll be there...

I've penciled it in, but it's the same weekend as Cedar Vale!
How can I be in 2 places at once, when I'm not anywhere at all?
Follow the rubber line!

Happy New Year Tony!! - - and see you in Vegas next month! - - JJC

I will be attending again next year. I also have a cabin in Prescott that will have an empty room for anyone traveling from out of state that wants to stay for free. It is just about a 1 hour (and an incredibly beautiful and fun one at that) drive to Cottonwood from there. Looking forward to it.
I too can confirm Jim's existence, you can find him fraternizing with the waitresses at Denny's the first Sundays of every month up on Bell Rd

Phoenix night rides in summer is 95-100F like Vegas as I recall. Or are you referring to Hawaii then? I would only spend 6 months @ a time in Oahu, 70'sF then as I recall.
-
Night time in the PHX area. Usually up to Saguaro Lake via Fountain Hills from Mesa then back down Usery Pass Road to Mesa.
-
Having lived there on an off for >25 years, there are two seasons in "The Valley of the Sun" (Phoenix area) - "Heaven and Hell"
"Heaven" is Thanksgiving through Memorial Day...."Hell" is Memorial Day through Thanksgiving. However, you CAN ride all year long if you can take the summer heat.
Where I live now in northern AZ (Yavapai-Coconino counties...) is much more "temperate' with four (4) distinct seasons and is much more tolerable... Again, riding 365 days per year for the most part... :1: :thumb:

Cottonwood would have been perfect, being so close. With young children at home, there's little chance of getting to any of the others. In eleven years, our youngest will be 18, so there's still hope for us!

Okay. Here's what you do. Take a support vehicle with the kids. You and your hubby take shifts riding your bike. You have helmets for the kids. If you go with a bunch, then you and your husband can round robin with other riders in a group, the kids too. I'm okay with you folks riding my SP1000. I'm pretty sure Fay would be okay with you riding her Scout. Can't speak for Richard and his 1400 Cali but he does have a V7 II. :thumb:

That sounds fun! However, my hubby informed me last week that he will be in Texas that weekend to visit family. I may take the kids on a day trip to Cottonwood in the van, so as not to completely miss out, but riding is now out of the question.
I was also sad to have missed this month's MGNOC breakfast. Our youngest was ill and all she wanted was to cuddle with Mama.

Lots of great fishing in Oak Creek Canyon...and there is even a "Trout Farm" there as well...the kids would LOVE that!
Catch a trout...they gut and dress it for you right there....then grill yourself or take it down to The Heartline Cafe in West Sedona, and for a nominal fee, the head chef will make "Trout Almondine" for you and the family!!
Mmmmmmm-BOY!! :thumb: :1:

:1: So true, and my kids haven't had that pleasure yet.
Grampa took me fishing many a time on our summer "RV the USA" trips. Grama would clean 'em and fry 'em for supper midwestern style. We usually caught perch (yellowbellies), trout or catfish and it was all good eats after Grama got her hands on them.
Later, I'd go fishing with my dad and his buddies down in the Sea of Cortez, or Costa Rica and they would arrange to have a local restaurant prepare them for our evening meal. I've hauled in some big yellowtail, roosterfish, swordfish and the like, but I'll tell ya, the hardest fish to bring in was a chunky red snapper. The thing just dove for the bottom and tried to take me with it, but damn it tasted goooood! :thumb:

That would be Sedona's, right? We visited there on the way back from a Cub Scout trip to Flag's ice caves in '11. The kids loved feeding the fish, but we didn't stay to catch any. :thumb: At about the same time we did catch and release at Cesar Chavez Park, here in Phoenix. Our eldest might remember, the middle boy won't and our daughter was still a babe (born in '11).

Sedona, (Pop. about 11,000), gets about 4-4.5M visitors PER YEAR from around the world, so tourism is their big industry. Believe me...they know how to deal with a variety of "tourista's!" (LOL)

Any of the negative comments are from the whiners. IMHO.

Actually with taxes it's $50 per person 2 in a room, $100 each for 2 nights. I too have a room for 2 reserved now as I did last year. Shared the room with a fellow Guzzisti from Colorado. :boozing:

Anyone who speeds through Wikieup is asleep or inattentive. The signs are pretty well placed and visible, and any small town on a two-lane between two major cities is an obvious place to be alert! I won't ask who is boosting the local sheriff's numbers...

Radar Detector JJ...think we had a long thread on this a while ago! Solo S3 runs on batteries...no wiring needed...right there where you need it on a RAM mount!
Besides..you're used to speed traps in places like Show Low...thought you had your eyes/ears peeled for these types of issues!

Hi Paul!! How are you and thanks for yanking my CARROT!!!
So this week, I will have to SIT in front of my laptop for four (4) hours taking a silly Arizona Defensive Driving School course so I don't have to pay $170 and get 2 points on my license and then have ALLSTATE call me telling me they are raising my insurance rates!! That's nice....

Hey JJ...before you waste, I mean enjoy those 4 hours this weekend, have you looked into whether you have Deferred Adjudication in Arizona? Would save you the time, but not the money...and depending on the county, it's either 3 or 6 months without another violation, and this "incident" will never show up on your record.
Since this is offered here in Houston...thought you might check if it's offered in Sedona too...Coconino or Yavapai county...can't remember which one is the right county up there.
The joy of those 4 hour courses on line is you can't just click click click thru them at a high rate of speed, they seem to be timed so you have to actually spend the full amount on each screen.
Cheerio!
-
Driver's Ed. class is the deferment. Kind of like probation but for moving violations.
-
I can't believe some of you other Guzzi Geezers still haven't figured out the last place you should speed is thru a next to nothing 'town'. For that short period of time I always play their speeding game. It's the main way they can get revenue to pay for their services. :azn:

It's over now...6 hours (5pm-11pm) last night in my hotel room...NOT four (4) hours...due to slow, painful Internet connection....DREADFUL!!! Cost was $220!!
AZ Wayne is correct...one needs to really watch going through these small, snoozy little Arizona towns with 45 mph posted speed limits...and especially at the END OF THE MONTH!! Quota time!!
-
Anyone who speeds through Wikieup is asleep or inattentive. The signs are pretty well placed and visible, and any small town on a two-lane between two major cities is an obvious place to be alert! I won't ask who is boosting the local sheriff's numbers...
Yes...the 45 mph signs are clearly posted...and YES!!....I was cruising at about 60+ mph behind a line of five (5) cars "going with the flow"...and FLAPPING with my buds and not being...."ATTENTIVE!!"    ...and the penalty?!? $220 for the online Defensive Driving Class....and 6 hours (not 4 hours) of PAIN.....due to a slow Internet in my hotel room....That was nice....5pm-11pm....
All designed as "torture" to be PAINFUL and DREADFUL!!!
The DPS officer, however was very professional and only wrote me for 55 mph in a 45 mph zone...I was clocked at 62 mph!!
Had I been on my bike or driving solo...I am sure I would have been...."more ATTENTIVE!!"
-
Ahhhh.....the semi-retired life. Attention span getting shorter. Just your luck to be the last in the line up. The DPS officer can't pull everyone over and cite so the last one gets it.

Except sadly...I am not retired (yet) and took a full-time job Dec. 11th!!   I was on two day "furlough" as a group of us have been going to Vegas every year for >20 years!!
Yes, I was the last of a 4-5 car line-up...and frankly speaking...I was just following the others, who clearly were going the same speed as me...(about 55-60 mph) "going with the flow"...and I was the unlucky one who got nabbed...
Oh well...if that is the worst thing that will happen to me in 2018...it's just fine with me!

So back to work. I guess the downtime was just transitional.

Yeah...I get that, but it's different from Deferred Adjudication which is a court process, not a Defensive Driving course. Two separate, mutually exclusive processes. Under deferred adjudication you don't have to take the defensive driving course...you just pay the fee which is equivalent to taking a defensive driving course, and then wait the required 3 or 6 months dictated by the county. If no further infractions in that time, then, the incident doesn't show up on your record...
I just don't know if that is offered everywhere...at any rate, I'm sure JJ enjoyed his 6 hours!

Again, it should have only been four (4) hours, but thanks to a slow Internet connection at my hotel, 2 more hours of PAIN were inflicted...
...and my sympathetic wife just said: "That's what you get for flappin' you gums and not paying attention!!!"

Totally get what you're saying but if it's still handled the same way. To be eligible for the deferment, JJ would have to go to the DDC which is court approved or ran by a gov. body. While mutually exclusive, the tie in would be that you need the DDC if you want the deferment. The court can do whatever it wants but I doubt they grant a deferment without the DDC.

Actually, deferred adjudication works differently than that. You pay the fine, but you don't do a Defensive Driving course, you have to then not incur any additional infractions during the period the court sets (can be 3-6 months depending on the county). if after that period of time, you have not had any further infractions, the citation is dismissed...so it never appears on your record. The financial equivalent of paying the deferred adjudication is very similar, although it can be a bit more than the DDC...but at least it saves you the painful 6 hours of internet time or the 8 hours of class time of a DDC.
:) Check your local state/country requirements...they do vary, but the concept may still apply.

You could say that. Someone else could say that. I would never say that (and I don't like or pay any attention to NFL football!). Why compare a noble and historic brand to a bunch of squabbling millionaires and billionaires?

Perhaps I will still ride up to you guys in Cottonwood in the AM and back to Prescott with you for the lunch. Either way, heading over Mingus mountain two times in a day is always something to look forward to (I assume that is your route?).

Well, for me, it's another Friday (T.G.I.F.), so it's high time for me to leave work and the planet Chandler far behind...and motor on up "The Big Hill"...to re-enter..."Vortex-Land" for the weekend!!  :thumb: I just might have to fire up one of the scoots for a ride!! :1:

Wait.....what? You work in Chandler? Long commute.
Yes, I stay in a hotel near the facility 4 nights per week, Mon. thru Thurs., (company paid), and drive home Fri. @ 12 noon, so technically, only 2 times per week, but it is 2 hours / 122 miles each way!! 4 nights in Chandler, 3 nights in Vortex-Land, then the cycle repeats!
-
I use to teach at Chandler HS before it became the sprawling suburb that it is now.

At least you're getting some mileage for your two hour commute. San Fernando Valley to LAX in peak traffic hours, and in a car, can take that long, or damn near it and that commute is under 30 miles. Sure glad I don't have to do that any longer.

I flew into Oakland International last week just for the day on business, and forgot how bad traffic was...even between 9am-2:30pm....forget about "Rush Hour!!"
-
Give Nor-Cal some loves for me!
At least Oakland I is an easy airport to get in/out of. Phoenix natives have no idea about how bad traffic is elsewhere. IMHO Maricopa County has done a decent job of anticipating and preventing most of the traffic issues that plague other metropolitan areas.

Oakland International is much easier to fly into then SFO and certainly LAX...no question!!

I think it was United who provided a cockpit comm channel on the headphones...SFO traffic was an amazing mix of inbound overseas flights where the International Radio Operators Phonetic Alphabet is the most English some pilots speak and the 'Chuck Yeager'-style West Virginia drawl "We got ourselves a little problem, folks..." of English-speaking pilots challenged AT Control operations...hats off to those folks who always seem to manage a "Have a good flight, sir/madam..." despite conditions.... :thumb:

Well...since I have a touch of "OCD"...I would personally be running around and be picking up the napkins on the ground!!!
Seriously though, we cleaned up quite well for both days...and gave extra food, (Pizza from Fri. night and BBQ from Sat. night), that was left-over to the hotel staff...and they were very grateful and happy!
-
OCD? I've got CDO! It's a lot like OCD, but in alphabetical order. Like it should be.
I booked a room today. So put me down for pizza and BBQ! The room was $98 a night, they said that's the rate cause it's "Fair Weekend". So big goings-on in Cottonwood?

I am really hoping to make it down there this year, but am not in a position to commit. I have a question for the Arizona knowledgeable. How hard would it be to find a "last minute", say within a week of the event, room in the area? It is sort of a popular area and good season to be there, so I am concerned that winging it will work. Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

You should be fine...there is a Super 8, Best Western, and several other hotels / motels in and around the Cottonwood area and all within 5-15 minutes from "The View" we we are staying. However, need to CALL and CHECK first. Also, there is the Rio Verde campground 5 minutes away as well. :thumb:
-
Thanks JJ, that sounds promising. I really hope I can make it down there!
-
Well, I made a reservation, so you can tentatively plan on another mouth at dinner Friday and Saturday (and being used extensively for drinking and gabbing otherwise). I still am not sure enough to say I will be there, but if there's another event in the area I figured I'd better reserve in case.
Now, which bike to ride? The Norge? No, it'll likely be in for service. The Stelvio? Maybe - but I might want to use it for New Mexico late on. The Griso? Sounds like just the right distance, and the right kind of bike for the roads in the area! Decisions, decisions....
-
You can cancel with only 24 hours notice, so that's good. Not sold out yet? I think they are getting close. The Norge will be my weapon of choice, 1500 miles each way.
-
If you show up on ANY motorcycle, Guzzi or whatever, that's all that really matters!  :thumb:
In downtown Cottonwood, on Main Street, there are also two motels - The Tavern Hotel (behind the Tavern Grill) and the The Iron Horse, and more. Check those out as well...maybe 15 minutes away. See below
The Pines Motel and Super 8 and Best Western are all walking distance to the View Motel! :thumb:
Historic downtown Cottonwood is the NEW happening place in the Verde Valley, with restaurants, shops, wineries and more!

Go swimming!?! Unless the pool is heated, we low desert dwellers won't dip a toe without the temps being 100 or better for at least a week! When we visit California my children "swim" in the hot tub as the pool, even heated, turns them blue.

Did you have any boys, or just the girls? Where I grew up, the tubing rivers hit mid 60s in the summer and the ocean was cooler. 90 was a hot day. I still don't find heated pools refreshing in hot weather. So if it's 80 and the pool is not heated, fine by me.

I have two boys 10.5 and 14.5, and a daughter that just turned 7 last month. I grew up walking distance from a river and was quite an otter (and wave runner) in northern California but my kids are Phoenix natives. I've adapted and get chilly if it's 80 with a breeze. In Phoenix, it's not hot until the temps break 105! :thumb:

Indeed....
That was my reaction when they told me at Pie Town, New Mexico that their pies cost $35 each!!!!
Were their "rather spendy pies" any better than a similar sized Village Inn pie for $8? ...or a large pie from Rock Springs Cafe for $18-$22?!?
Ahhhhhhh....that would be a big......NO!
-
That's because in Pie Town, it's a LONG way to the next pie...think you can make it, pilgrim??

There is a different work ethic today... Both parents were old-school working-class - had to earn money for everything I wanted...
* At age 12-14, I mowed lawns in the summer, and shoveled driveways in the winter - $3-$5 per lawn, $10 per driveway
* At age 14-15, I worked at a local Diary Farm for $1.10 per hour - did everything from shoveling cow / horse manure to hay bailing to putting up barb wire fences. Every summer, worked 2 weeks 10-14 hours per day, 10 days straight at the local country fair (Dutchess County Fair - Rhinbebeck, NY) in August.
* At age 16-17 - I washed dishes at a local restaurant on weekends. also worked as a bar-back / bus-boy - and during the week at nights, I worked at the local grocery stores, A&P, The Grand Union, etc. in town.
* At age 18-21 - worked two (2) jobs the entire time I was going to college - full-time - during the day - UPS in the mornings (as a loader and pre-load supervisor), and at night, worked at a cigar store in town. Lived at home the entire time...no frat parties or university activities for poor ol' JJ.
* Age 21 until the present, (turning 64 in August...) I have worked various jobs in the semiconductor industry - Manufacturing - Training - Sales - Marketing - Business Development - - Sadly, still working full-time!
-
Similar background out here too.

We both come from a different generation with different values and work ethic......
With my work / travel schedule, I am just grateful I can ride to / attend:

* The New Mexico Guzzi Rally in Datil (August)
* The Guzzi N.A.R. in Lake Henshaw, CA (October)

For me, mother and father both Italian...My dad was the head...but my mother was "the neck." She was hard-working and loving. My father was mellow and practical until someone dissed him...then he quickly morphed into "Tony Soprano!"   - - and that usually was not pretty. What they taught my younger sister and I was " fierce independence"...and that fact that you have to work hard for everything you want.... and that "you need to totally accountable and responsible for your actions." What a concept... :thumb:

Best one like that I ever heard was my wife's grandmother talking about walking to school in the winter in Dayton, Ohio with a warm potato in her pocket to keep her hands warm...later on...that same potato also served as...."LUNCH!!"

Yes! There is a Super 8 right down the hill from The View, Best Western across the street, Pine Inn around the corner, also several hotels / motels in historic downtown Cottonwood. Check it out! :1: :thumb:  Also, camping nearby (see flyer) NOTE: There is a county Fair going on that weekend also, so be advised...
-
Thanks for the info, just booked a room at the Super 8.

I've been there (many times) before - it's only humid on the mainland, out on the islands the tradewinds keep it all under control.
Except during hurricane season, of course!

Hello Guzzi Friends.
I'll be riding my 75 Convert with Glen Morgan to the GOE from Los Angeles, CA.
I've sure it's been mentioned in other posts, but Guzzi Bob Dickman (Safety Bob) passed last weekend.
If you knew Bob, be ready to tell some Bob stories. Let's give him a proper send off...

Minor change of plans - I won't be in Cottonwood on Friday night, as a client needs me on Friday and I wouldn't get away in time. I will be down Saturday though, unless things really get screwy.
Depending on how early I get away, I may see you at the hotel in the morning, or else meet up in Prescott at lunch.

Had I stayed in Arizona, I would have bought a home in Gilbert.

Just wanted to give JJ a shout out for a great time!!! As always the people make it what it is, and the bikes are the icing on the cake.
I got home last night about 8:30. Left Sedona around noon. Nice uneventful ride home, about 660 miles in all from Cottonwood, I went up and back down Oak Creek, so beautiful.
Made my first stop in Kanab on the way home, the Shell station was closed but the pumps were on, so I filled up the big girl and sat down for a little break, myself. As I'm sitting there, a gentleman pulls up and asks if I've been at Cottonwood? Ummmmm yeah I have, he asks how the ride was going and we get talking. He had been following the thread here on Wildguzzi. His name is Gary (sorry Gary, lost your last name), he's from Vegas and has had a few Guzzi's over the years. He now lives in Kanab. Great guy, he was former member number 4 in MGNOC, now is lifetime member 67 I believe he said. Hopefully he will chime in here if I missed anything.
In short, it was great to see some old acquaintances and get to meet some new ones! I hope to see some of you in Utah in September!

Hahahaha - Yeah, that seat on the Griso - that's the one. Hard to believe one ugly seat could garner the amount of grief he got for that.
