Caught a little downhill on Saturday, while eating lunch at Chilli's.

The skiing events are my faves at the winter olympics.  Then probably the bobsled/luge events.

Americans dominated all of the snowboard events . Watching the women trying to stay upright in the wind and ice pellets during the ladies slope style was scary . Very brave ladies .

Womens USA hockey team beat the Russians 5-0.  Until now had no idea women competed in the winter Olympics so much like now.    Canadians so far are kicking butt overall !!  South Koreans doing good too.  If you get satellite TV there's a channel that shows all the highlights of all the competition in afternoon and evening.  :thumb:

Mikaela Shiffrin.  :1: :1: :1:  Could be three gold medals or more for her.

Bode Miller is the best English-language alpine skiing broadcast analyst ever born. Ever. Dry, clear, perceptive, calm, no bullshit. He should be coaching the US team.

That said, NBC dropped the ball on the downhill by not showing the full US contingent.

US women's hockey team rules, again.

Yeah , Bode is very good at his job , and Mikaela has been amazing . In some ways Olympians like the guy from Ghana (?) who competed in the Skeleton event with no chance of a medal tell just as compelling a story as the competitors at the very top . Gratifying to see athletes like that receive support from the crowd .

Mikaela is going to turn out to be the best alpine skier of all time, and that should be proven over the next two winters. She'll catch Stenmark's record of World Cup wins and set new records for world championship and olympic medals. She's only 22 and already halfway there.

She might be...and super exciting to watch as is Lindsay Vonn, but that's still a lot of races to run and win...and glitches can happen, or injuries too.    I hope she gets it and smashes every record...admirable work ethic and dedication to being the best, and not afraid to say that's her goal.

Everyone said Tiger would catch Nicklaus at the blistering pace he was on as well early in his career, and he's close to catching Sam Snead's overall wins, but probability is much lower now that he'll get to Jack's Majors wins level.

And the Can-Am women's' hockey rematch will be a slobber knocker.

OK, this is a serious question.  It involves PC, sexism, ME TOO, Italian Culture, etc.
Today I watched USA vs. Italy in Men's Curling.  The Italian uniforms have a strange logo in the upper right chest.  I can't find any Internet reference so I can't identify what it is or what it means.  It clearly shows the silhouette shape of two women sitting back to back.  It is intensely reminiscent of the common trucker mudflap chrome image that we often see along th highway.  Like this only back to back.

Not sure why this is on a curling uniform.  Does it define some financial sponsor?

On a related note, we've had some gender political strife here in the SF Bay Area.  One of the morning sports jock anchors referred to Chloe Kim the snowboard gold medalist as a "17 year old piece of a__".  Now out of a job and likely out of a career.  Justifiably so.

This is the best I could do to freeze frame and capture an image by camera:

Any enlightenment here?

For some reason the image I found is clipped at the sides when I attach it to a post.
But as you can see it's the silhouette of a man and a woman sitting back to back.

Yes, hypnotizing eyes. She's evidently a 2 or 3 handicap golfer, too.

But, she missed a key shot and her team lost to the USA.

Biathlon is the one for me. How they take their heart rate from full sprint down to sniper calm in a matter of moments confounds me. And short track speed skating... all out racing elbow to shoulder.

:1:  I'd have the kids sprint then shoot.  Great way to get them to understand the physical aspect of marksmanship.

Standing.  Shooting non-supported.  Prone there are more contact points to stabilize the shooting platform (person).  All of this is academic if the shooter can't slow their respiration and heart beat.  If they know enough about their body then they can shoot in between any pulses that their body generates.

Right, it's a trade-off between spending time to slow the respiration down and risking shooting between fast pulses (hope I got that right!)
Looked it up: When they arrive at the shooting range the pulse rate is typically 190-195, slows down to 170-175 before they start shooting, and to 140 by the time they've fired the 5th and (hopefully) last shot.
The targets are 45 mm for the prone, 115 mm for the standing shooting, 50 m range.
They have to observe wind conditions and adjust the sights on the rifles, too.

Agree, the biathlons are very exciting events. Very well suited for tv, and some unpredictability. It's among the most popular winter sports on TV in Europe, I believe, bringing in money from advertising and sponsors.

Hard to explain all of this to teenagers when they want to put rounds downrange.  Fortunately we were only using air rifles.  If we used 22's like we use to.  I'd only have possible 2 or 3 kids instead of 15-20.
