CTEK Battery charger message
« on: February 21, 2018, 12:44:03 PM »
My CTEK charger told me the other day that it had a problem in so far as it said "charging stopped as battery MAY not be able to hold charge" with the battery installed in the bike

I reset it and got the same message

Following that I took the battery out of the bike and tried again - no message this time

Could a volt leak in the bike wiring fool the charger into thinking it was a duff battery?

I would check the cables to batt both ends and get it load tested. Does the charger have a truth or lie lite?

Possibly, perhaps leave it in the bike on the charger and disconnect/reconnect the ground wire.

What bike, Carl's drawing might shed a clue?
I'm guessing the Breva with a direct connect regulator, does it go flat in a few days without the charger?

I was hoping you would see this Roy  :thumb:

Its the Breva 1100 and I've not noticed it going flat ... yet

I know you have written on the benefits of vaseline on battery terminals but please remind me.

Is it vaseline and then connect or connect and then vaseline

Cheers

Tris

The CTEK has a sulfation test and correction stage. It might give that message if you have a shorted cell. Have you tested the specific gravity?

Is it vaseline and then connect or connect and then vaseline
Tris

Scrape the Lead post until shiney, apply Vaseline then bolt it back together.
Negative disconnected first, re-connected last.
If you were to look under a microscope the joint is like a couple of mountain ranges scrunched together, the Vaseline fills in the gaps and keeps the Oxygen out, no Oxygen = no Lead Oxide.
Lead Oxide is an insulator, you can see that if you touch your meter onto the gray Lead post, it doesn't connect until you jab the point in. The guys over on the Suzuki site "Intruder Alert Café" used to swear by putting a star washer between the joint but I think that's BS.
One application of Vaseline lasts for years, even regular grease works but it's dirty.
Similar applies to connections in a wet area, the Vaseline will stop corrosion or rust, I use it on all crimped joints just poke the wire into the jar first.

Just out of curiosity if you have a 12 V test light pull out the 2 main 30 Amp fuses and put the test light in place of each fuse (not to chassis) to see if there is any drain. You can test the light by turning on the ignition, that will make it light up for sure.
