I've put about 2K miles on the '91 Le Mans I bought last Fall. Over the Winter it got a lot of attention and freshening. New clutch and associated seals, brake lines, carb rebuilds and Dyna ignition among other things. Jetting is finally sorted and the bike performs fantastically. It really suits me with one minor issue and I don't know if there's a solution. The wind blast coming over the shield hits me right in the throat, which, here in Maine means cold. There's also a lot of noise.

My question is has anyone tried a different shield, if there is such a thing, or, tried cutting down the stock shield to get your helmet into a cleaner air stream?

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks Charlie. Do you have any idea if the shield for the LM IV is the same as the LM V? They sure look very similar.

Anyone out there with first hand experience?

Thanks

Yes, "IV" and "V" are the same.

I LIKE those options, thanks, Charlie! Now maybe if this post mentioned "LeMans Windscreen options" in the title, we might get some feedback from owners who have used one of those windscreens? Let's see....

Wait a minute...how did cutting the stock windscreen down reduce helmet noise? Seems like the blast would NOW hit you in the throat, something SPmoto was trying to eliminate.

Does helmet roar occur because the windblast is hitting the helmet, and if you cut it down, the helmet is now in un-faired streamwise 70 mph wind?

I'm new to the LM IV world, and my first impressions are the the amazingly loud helmet roar at highway speeds, but I tossed it off as "better get used to it"....

It hits in the upper chest rather than the throat... prior to the mod I'd have to sit up so that my helmet was clear of the blast.

Which was still preferable to 8 hours of helmet roar.

I think the screen looks better without the ski jump too.

How tall are you guys? Could this be a factor, or is this just a thing about the LM4/5 models?

The Lario uses the same windscreen. After all, a LeMans 4 is only a 5/4 scale Lario.  The Lario was first..
I tried the screen with the kickup, and cut it down after riding with it a bit. I much prefer it that way. Got rid of the helmet buffeting.

Thanks all! Ill be cutting mine down ASAP. A"clean" airstream is what I'm after.
So, I've cut down a couple of shields before but not one as small and with such acute  bends and angles. In the past I've used masking tape and a sabre saw. Is the Dremel tool preferred in this case?

Different part number than the "IV" and "V" screen - Lario: 27577261, Le Mans 1000: 28577278.

This is the cut down screen.

It's an aftermarket one... the fit is not as nice but I wanted to keep the original original.

I wouldn't have thought to use a sabre saw it seems too brutal!

Agreed. I detailed how to do the cut down with a band saw, DA, and propane torch on the Lario rehab thread, page 14. (completed projects area )
