Engine cutting out on Right cyclinder
« on: June 20, 2018, 12:21:15 PM »
This is on my CX with Dyna ignition and black coils. I have checked all of the wires and everything seems OK. It runs ok, then the right side cuts out...then it starts back up like a light switch being flipped. I haven't pulled the coil to look for a crack but that is my next choir; Dyna is about 15 years old, never had a problem. The switching on is the head scratcher, which makes me think it is a loose wire, but I haven't found anything yet. Suggestions?

Maybes switch coils and see if problem moves to left side.

Likely a bad ground, or intermittent break in power to coil. Not super familiar with these coils, but could could be going bad too. You could swap out the coils and see if the problem is replicated on the left side. If so it's probably your coil. If not, and the right still cuts out then it's probably somewhere in the power supply to the coil or a bad ground. I've had some of the non soldered or crimped connector ends break over time and give intermittent problems like this. Just had this happen on my fuel pump on one of my cars. When I'm making my own crimp connections, I always try to solder the wire end before putting it in the connector and crimping it. This helps with that over the long term but not always.

Had the same problem several years ago om 1986 IV Lemans. I just broke down and purchased a new set of Dyna coils from MGCycle.

Power to the coils comes from the kill switch normally, then from 1 coil to the other. I still use green ones.

Dyna coils ground and shed heat via the center post.  It needs to be well grounded.  They will overheat if no airflow.

Both coils are grounded via the center posts and have been that way for years. I will check the grounds, switch the coils and see what happens. I will go through all the wires again and see if there is some hidden corrosion.

I think that is a good idea. Fading memory says the right side is the one that fails when the big block Dyna unit goes belly up. My only experience is with the Dyna S, and it is bullet proof.. unless.. someone leaves the ignition on without it running.

Went through the small amount of wires at work, rode home and no problems so maybe I solved the problem, though nothing was obvious. I hate vague electrical success or seemingly successful success. See what happens in the morning.

Agree - fixing something is very satisfying but fixing something and never really knowing what the fault was .... not so much. But hey a fix is a fix right !

Me too, I've had a few recently, putting the 1100 back together I could not get the power relay to come in, traced all the wires, took off the connections and put them back and the relay came in and has been fine since.............. ........all was clean before I started all that and I still do not know why it didn't work then started to.

It unsettles me, I just get the nagging doubt the next time it's going to do it, is when I am alone and far from home on some dammed inconvenient back road.
