Timely post for me, my standard schnauzer Bix was diagnosed with cancer last week. He’s been a great friend. We’ll take good care of him till it’s his time.

Some things get easier the more they happen.
Hit your finger with a hammer.
Get a shock from touching a electrical plug.
Your first ticket.
But losing a dog gets harder every time, at least for me.
My dogs are always with me (3 now)
My very best friends, I swear we can read each other's minds.
I make their own food, warm it up and feed them before I eat.
Dogs are God's gift to mankind. My rescues thank me every day, and I make sure I thank them.

Bix, looks totally comfortable there "chillin" on the couch, John.
What a great looking little partner you got there.
Schnauzers are awesome , loving pups, that dont know their size....They think they are a HUGE dog, and love to play hunting!
My wife's family has always had a couple of them.

John, sorry to hear this. Vet specialist have come a long way with treatment, seems like they know more than regular doctors.
My current kids, My Boxer was not given much chance to survive about 6-7 years ago. A specialst had removed part of his lower jaw, til safe margins. He eats, plays with a ball, LOVES his soft toys, and is one of the loves of my life. He HAS to be close to me at all times.
He's 13+ years young now, probably has hiked more miles on the AT than most "hikers"
When he gets tired now, I carry him until he rests. Licking my face the whole time, his way of thanking me.
All my kids have a story, Don't want to ramble on too much

Bix is actually a pretty big dog hes 55 lbs (standard schnauzer) Ive been owned by schnauzers for ohhh 25 years or so. The male standards are totally dedicated to thier people, Ive been around some dogs but Ive never expierenced anything like the 2 males Ive had. Before Bix we had Ike and Maimie (the isenschnauzers) Maimie is still with us but shes an old lady now

I just lost my Giant Schnauzer of 12 years to bone cancer. It's tough, I know how you feel Brother but  the 12 years I had him as my buddy it's worth the pain.

Wow,Bix IS a big dog, John. Come to think of it,my wifes family actually has miniature schnauzers. Those are the ones I was thinking of when I said they think they are a bigger dog than they actually are.

I had three of the minis too. The Standards and Giants Like Ncdan mentioned are totally different critters : )

Thank you for posting this.

Our furbaby, Guenevere AKA 'Guena', may not make it to her 15th birthday (this Tuesday the 26th) as her kidneys are failing.  Thanks to this post, everytime my heart skips a beat, it will be her little tail wagging.

Dusty routinely threatens to ban me when I post poetry.   But I have always liked this.  Some of my biggest heart aches are from the loss of my special canine buddies.

Kipling from 1922.

The Power of the Dog

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vets unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find. Its your own affair
But you be given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!).
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone. wherever it goes. for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We be sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer weve kept em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long
So why in Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts for a dog to tear?

Has anyone ever read "The Art of Racing in the Rain" ?  A great book, especially for gearheads and dog lovers.

The author starts with the premise that the really great dogs are one step away from being reborn as humans.

Like all great dog stories, it's a tearjerker.
