2014 California 1400 Quitting
« on: June 20, 2018, 08:44:13 PM »
Wonder what causes engine to shut-off.  Slow down and stop and the engine simply shuts :thewife: itself down.  Did tonight only 74 degrees???  Fan on the oil cooler not coming on?  When it was 88 degrees this last weekend the engine shut off everytime I stopped

.  It would then start and run though?

did you have spark?

You might carry a spare plug with you, pull a lead and install the spare plug and see if it fires on the fins on the engine.

Then you'll know if the problem is spark or fuel.

Is it throwing any codes? You need Guzzidiag or alternative to read them.

Is the bike completely stock?

My 1200gs would do that when it was fitted with a KN filter, cat-less headers and free flow exhaust. Reverted everything to stock, re-learned the throttle position and the problem disappeared.

I know some guys have had something similar caused by the Evap canister. Try cracking the filler cap off & see if the tank is vapour locked?

I'd have to say that the above post is sage advice. The re-breathing system as it sits is arse.

Cracking the cap may not in and of itself fix it but not simply relying on the system to self purge is at best hopeful.

On a conventional system you can purge the system by simply cracking the throttle plates until it begins to fire and then drop the throttle, (An ugly way of dealing with it, but it will deal with it.). With the RBW system I don't know if the throttle plate will even respond to the twistgrip until the crank speed exceeds a certain point which might render any amount of throttle twisting ineffective and irrelevant. Mark might know?

Here is a YouTube video clip from yesterday of the engine simply quitting! Has Agostini exhaust.  Runs, start great no missing coughing anything. But, pulled up put kickstand down walked around bike and it kills itself?  Seems like oil cooler fan is not running BUT FUSE is good?   Hot engine?  13,500 miles  Has had regular valve adjustments at require schedule.  Changed the rear differential lube WRENCH Icon is displayed on gauge did reset!  Engine was quitting before at IDLE prior to this Icon appeared!  SEE VIDEO LINK

Are you certain the valve lash has been set correctly? I haven't yet listened to the vid as it's early morning and Jude's asleep but if it's dying at idle it could be tight valves. Worth checking at least.

THe oil cooler fan has little to do with the power circuit, It has an inline thermostat, nothing to do with the ecu. If the fan fuse if ok, then something weird is going on, there will be other things getting no power at the same time. Battery wires are not loose?

Just listened to the vid. Is that strange squawking noise real or just an effect from the crappy cellphone microphone?

First thing I'd try if you are sure the valves are OK is disconnect the battery and then leave the key on for a few minutes. Turn key off and reconnect the battery, (You'll loose yout time settings and trims.) then start it up again and see if it helps. While frustrating as you won't find the cause it quite often *Fixes* things if you re-boot the system. I got a call from a shop in Townsville last week with a Cali that was presenting similar issues, I suggested they try that and voila! Problem solved.
