Running Lights Flooded on My Suburban (NGC)
« on: March 19, 2018, 09:40:33 AM »
I started burning out front turn signal and running lights on my 2000 Suburban 2500. When I went to check the bulbs I discovered that the housings were full of water. Any ideas about correcting this? The bulb holders are now trashed and the rubber gaskets no longer keep the rain out...will new sockets and rubber washers do the trick? Do the housings require drain holes? Thanks in advance.

Hey Sheepdog:

I have an '05 Tahoe, guess I have that to look forward to.
Anyway, my humble opinion without seeing/knowing anything, it does sound like the sealing function on the connectors is shot.  Replace the squishy seals.  Run some compressed air into the housings to dry them out before sealing back up.  I wouldn't drill drain holes, that would lead to condensation, bad for the bulbs.

Or, I am completely wrong.....

Thanks, Ken. That is the approach I was thinking of taking, but more than once I’ve gotten some absolute genius solutions to issues like this from wildguzzi. I believe that the Chevrolet pickups of that series had the same front end...maybe I’ll get lucky.

The fog lights are not expensive to replace.

You can find them on ebay and other places.

My bet is the glued seal between the lens and reflector is bad. The next thing you'll notice is the lens gone missing.

Fairly common failure on these old 99-06 Sububan/Tahoe/Yukon trucks.

Check your front turn signals, too. They can also fill with water when they get old and the glue between the lens and reflector starts going bad.

Both my fog lights have been missing lenses since I bought the truck. I guess I now know why...

Okay...I just placed an order on RockAuto. All new housings, sockets, and bulbs for the fog lights and the front turn-signal/daytime running lights cost me less than $165, including shipping. That didnt hurt much at all. Thanks, Dusty.

Park in a garage and don't drive in rain.
