Flathead V-6 in a Loop, auction ends today!
« on: September 12, 2018, 09:05:21 AM »
Sorry if I'm violating any forum rules for duplicate entries, but nobody is discussing this monster in the Swap section:

https://sherwoodauctionservicellc.hibid.com/catalog/141859/classic-cars--vintage-motorcycles--parts-and-more-/?cpage=2

There is a Loop Guzzi with a flathead V6 shoehorned into it on the first page. Can anyone ID the engine?

Farther down that same page is a '71 "Police" Loop with custom fenders and paint, looks like the same dude fabbed the fenders on the flathead-bike, but never finished. Now THERE'S a man with time, materials, and a cutting torch on his hands!

Interesting bike, but I think it is a Ford V8 flathead. They have a common exhaust for the two middle cylinders. It has four sparkplug holes per side.

Could be a cool project to finish up it the machining is done well.

It looks like a Model "B" V8.  239ci.  Basically two flathead Ford engines joined at the crank.

Whoops, my bad, a V8. Shows how much I know about agriculture.

I am more impressed by the energy to undertake such a project.

Looks like the distributor is in the front, if that's right I believe its a 1947 or earlier. Getting a radiator installed could prove difficult.
I do like the old flat head Fords. I saw Lincoln at a car show with a flat head V12. Ran like a kitten.

"agriculture"? It was a car engine, not a tractor engine.

you mean the energy that's going to be required? I don't even have the imagination to think about a project like that.

The bike just above appears to have the radiator in the "saddle bags"  A V8 60 flathead weighs about 400 pounds...A 221 or 239 Flathead V8 weighs about 500 pounds..

They are better suited for four wheel things like this rear engine car I made for a friend a few years ago....

My "agriculture" statement was from an obscure episode of The Flintstones from my youth. Some things I remember forever, my wedding anniversary I can never remember. I was hoping someone would recognize it.

From memory: Fred, being pompous, was trying to belittle poor Barney by insulting him for not understanding the nuance of whatever jamb they had gotten into, and chose to associate the jamb with a big word that he himself didn't understand and related in no way to their situation: Agriculture.

Why? A 500lb. engine that makes about 65HP.

About 15 years ago there showed up here in Pontiac, A Ford V8-60 in an Indian frame.
 Very pretty and sounded good.

It's for looks not performance... A V8 -60 is about 450 pounds, another 40 with the trans. It has about 80 ft lbs of torque at low rpm so it'll feel somewhat powerful in high gear.It has 3 speeds and first gear is not synchronized as car guys say....A high buck V8 60 with every speed trick  running on alcohol makes about 140 HP in a midget sprint car...A hot rod 280 cubic inch flathead V8 street engine with multiple cars, port work, headers, hotter cam, makes 200 HP on a good day...

Yep, 17 stud Flathead V8 60.  136 cu in, 60 HP.  The 37 and 38 would have had aluminum heads, the 39 either cast iron or aluminum, and the 40 aluminum only.

Looks like it's tin sided which would make it a 37.
