Stelvio 'clunk' then trans leak in bell housing- questions
« on: September 14, 2018, 03:13:03 PM »
Was out last week, leaving lunch, heard louder than usual 'clunk' when shifting into first. Nothing of issue at that time.
Drove fine, but heard a strange noise here and there while underway. Earplugs, highway speeds, tried to focus on it, but nothing of note.

Arrived home, smell of hot gear oil was a warning, 1oz or less of oil on the ground the next day. Started, ran, no issues, no smoke.

Put the bike on the lift, found oil at seam of eng/trans, top and bottom vents of bell housing had oil. Smells like trans oil, level OK in trans, engine level OK too. Biggest concern was the metal part found on top of trans near the vent hole in a puddle of oil.

Photos of metal part, oil seepage, etc here:

Not a lot of parts in there to be puked out of the vent hole (retainer spring?). Any suggestions? Seems like a motor/trans drop is in my future. Planning on rotating the entire flywheel first, but doubt I will find much.

Seal on trans- hard to replace? 2013 stelvio, link fixed

Hopefully the clutch didn't come apart and your trans has scoring through the box , bad stuff

That was my thought too. The set of dodgy plates seems to have been isolated to 2012 models as far as I can make out.

Well whatever it is you're going to have to go in.

My feeling is that chunk is probably an anti-rattle spring seat from the center of the friction plate. The damage to the gearbox face of the bell housing is typical of this failure. Most times as far as I can make out the damage doesn't compromise the integrity of the case but in this case it may of done or simply torn up the input shaft seal.

Pete, as always, many thanks. Teardown was planned.
