2008 Breva Sport 1200 ??
« on: September 17, 2018, 06:01:46 AM »
A local dealer has a 2008 Breva Sport 1200 for sale at $6,000 Canadian. It comes with 3 bags and has only 17,000 kilometers.

My question is how likely is the Dashboard to fail ... and are there any other speedo/tack units that can fit ?

There was a small number of dash units that had problems. Some were repaired others were beyond redemption. It would not put me off the bike if it had been well looked after and the dash working at the time.
I have never heard of a CARC dash replaced with a non factory unit, it may be be possible but not a likely outcome to a failed unit.

When I see one for sale it's usually $3500-4500.  My dash failed but I don't know how common that is.  With a Mistral carbon can it might have been the best sounding motorcycle I've ever owned but for whatever reason, dog's went crazy at the exhaust note.  Mike Bui risers with Mana bars made mine extremely comfortable and heavy Throttlemeister barends killed all the vibes.  Norge bags make one a superb naked touring mount...much better than the Norge IMHO because the suspension is adjustable and once sorted it handles as well as well or better than any 540lb motorcycle should.

Although the exchange rate varies from moment to moment, that currently works out to 4600 USD, which doesn't seem too bad with all three bags, but I really don't know for sure. I also noticed there is a taller windscreen and engine guard on the bike. Perhaps some other nice additions??

Since the dash and ECU work together, I would doubt there is an aftermarket option. As already noted, yes there have been failures. I don't know what percentage that number might be but I don't **think** it is high.

He doesn't mention if they're Norge or Givi bags but I think I paid either 7 or 900 when I bought the Norge bags and mounts from Moto International so they're a huge addition to an already nice bike.  The engine guards look like the ones I added to mine.  I think they were a couple hundred bucks.  At $4,600, with the luggage and mileage on the bike that seems like a decent deal for a motorcycle that can do serious, high speed miles in a day.

This Sport 1200 has the Hepco & Becker side bags included, and a Givi top box.   :bike-037:

I had a dash go bad that was replaced under warranty and a couple years later the replacement started having issues. As has been stated, there were some that did not have a waterproof coating on the circuit board that would corrode and fail. I rode mine in all weather while touring, including some hellacious rain storms.

I have not heard if there are actually any dash circuit boards that were coated, but maybe some were and they are as robust as any MC dash/ECU.

The bike, once sorted, was a really nice machine and one of my favorites of all time. I had the faster red one with black Norge type hard bags and a clear Laminar Lip add-on screen.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

Great bike, love mine.
I think the dash issues are overblown... a handful have created the myth..
Sport 1200's had most of those reported issues. A few Brevas, a few less Norges, but mostly Sports

I hopefully will be adding a second Guzzi to join my old 84 California II.  It has 121,000 kilometers now, and buying something a little sporty would be fun!   :bike-037:

I've had one dash failure. Replaced with spare dash from Jas67's B11. I've sent a few letters to the US operation that makes the dashboards since Guzzi has never addressed the problem.  Nothing back from them yet.

My 1200 Sport has approx 67,000 miles showing.  It's been one fine motorcycle, with few issues aside from the dashboard.  Amazingly, no oil or hypoid oil drips in this time.  A great sport touring bike.  Mine is outfitted with Bagster tank cover and bag, and HB 30 liter Junior bags.  I have a rear rack that I put on the bike when traveling, to strap on tent, sleeping bag, and air mattress. As I've gotten older and had a few health issues, the 1200S has begun to feel slightly top heavy and difficult to roll around the garage. I put her up for sale about a year ago for what I thought was a very reasonable price, but I failed to remember the snapping red suspenders .... so no sale.

A year later, I had to ask myself 'are you crazy?'  You (me) actually wanted to practically give away a perfectly good, nicely outfitted sport tourer for less than $4000.00?

That won't happen again!  She may sit with clean oil and on a battery charger, waiting until the right time comes, and we do another road trip.  But she'll sit ..... she isn't going anywhere!
