Please do study #4.   "Begging the question" is one of those very often misused concepts, and people get it wrong All The Time, like mixing up "complement" and "compliment", or studying a book by "pouring" over it.    The definition here for "begging the question" is correct ... an argument assumes that the conclusion is correct, and uses that assumption in the argument for the conclusion.

But people are ALWAYS saying things like "Some people say that life did not start on Earth, but came from an alien source, which begs the question as to how it started on the alien planet ...."

"Begs the question" is NOT the same as "Then leads to the additional question of".    Folks that actually take a Logic course will be disabused of this notion on the first pop quiz ... !

There's some really great insight there Lannis and worth a lot of consideration. On the topic of argument and conclusion, I can't see much wrong with arguing a point based on the fact that you think your reasoning is correct even if you're subsequently proven to be in error, you are arguing on your terms based on what you believe to be sound principles so your argumentative methods are sound although your facts may not be. What erks me however is when people take an undisputed fact and then construct an line of reasoning as to why that fact is so. Like, "oh the Earth rotates anticlockwise when viewed from above the North Pole, and I'll tell you why", just because your argument results in a correct conclusion, does not mean your explanation is correct. Now as for "complement and compliment" or "pouring and pawing", that can be used correctly when spoken but just spelled wrongly when written.

Just checked. Good question Huzo. It was in fact Skeeter Davis. Similar sound.

Might want to take another look Muzza. A country ballad, MGM 1966 ran 2min 36 sec. A bit like Patsy Kline but a little less suicidal.

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the 'why is ice slippery?' thread, but since it is a metaphysical (or is that 'metaphysics?) question I decided it was better here.

Why do the cubes in the top ice cube tray always come out easily when the ones in the lower tray(s) need a hot-water treatment to remove them?
