The one I use most often: "The eagle shits on Tuesday". Apparently, the Army issued checks with a picture of an eagle. The amount of the check was written beneath the eagle. And since the army didn't pay shit, ...

That phrase migrated over here during WW2 with the US personal that came here for R&R.  It was the cause of a little tension (Harder to get the girl if you had little money to spend) as for us it was only "Sparrow Farts"  "Sparrow farts" in this context is a term used here to this day.

My dad.
"Son, be like the archer and aim high.  You may not get what you are aiming for but you will get a hell of a lot further than if you aim low"

Yep, I wonder what my kids would say.  I think my daughter would say, "do you want fries with that" when referring to her degrees in english.

The "7 p's" rule - stated above.

The three rules of life:
1. never pass up an opportunity to sit down.
2. never pass up an opportunity to use the bathroom.
3. never trust a fart.

I'm not afraid of work. I can sit down right beside it and take a nap.

I get up early in the morning so I have a longer day to loaf.

I have 2

"Everything has a back to it, put it there"

and the very best

"If you see someone put their brakes on on a motorway, give them a wide berth"

Here, in Australia, it's all of them, often with no-one in sight, still heed the advise, pass them quickly with room, obviously blind, stupid or both.

My dad told me once, "If you need a helping hand, look to the end of your arm".

I had been dicking around not getting something done because I thought I couldn't do it myself. Turned out I could do it myself.

I use that reminder often. Thanks dad!

For people with poor organisational skills "Couldn't organize a root in a brothel with a fist full of fifties" or a little more politically correct "Couldn't organize a pissup in a brewery with a fist full of fifties". For those that cant get stuff sorted "Couldn't run a choko vine over an outdoor dunny (toilet)"

Le sardine mangiano le acciughe

In his dialect it sounded like

"Il salde manga le leege"

Translated literally "the sardines eat the anchovies"
Figurativly
"The big fishes eat the little fishes"

Or there's always a bigger fish...that's how he used it most...don't get too big on yourself... There's always someone faster, bigger...ya know

My Dad was a gentle giant kind of guy, a school teacher/principal who served his military obligation during WWII by being a guard in a prisoner-of-war camp in N. Ont.

He used to say, "Never, ever, get in fights. And when you do, remember there is no such thing as gentlemanly rules, so end it quick."

The sayings that I learned from my Dad can not be repeated on this forum. Those sayings did, however, prepare me for life in the submarine navy.

I think we all still do this, we try to figure out how to fix or repair something and can't without some sort of reference, a book, manual, something.  I remember my fathers famous saying... "When all else fails, read the book!"

My Pop's favorite saying was "Let the hair go with the hide!". To this day I have no idea what it means but I miss hearing it.

It meant he preferred things to remain as nature intended .

I miss him every day. Still. There was a lot about pulling your weight, meeting your obligations, taking care of what you should, but it was mostly by example.

The one I remember still comes out of my mouth, fairly frequently:

"Boy, you are having a learning experience, aren't you?'
"Yessir, I am. And I ain't never going to do this again!"
