Rear Main Seal Repacement Help!
« on: January 16, 2017, 07:14:15 PM »
Hey gang,

Had to pull my transmission off of the G5 to get at the the rear mail seal ( leaking ). Everything was fine till I started to put he alignment tool and forgot to put the flywheel/ring gear holder on top and moved the flywheel an unknown amount. So, how do I get it is the right position to mark and remove?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Set it up at TDC, doesn't matter which side, and look at the edge of the flywheel on that side. You'll see an arrow stamped into it. That lines up with the little cast in divot in the crankcase that is in line with the centreline of the bore on that side.

It's more of a "pointer" - one at approx. the 10 o'clock position and another at 2 o'clock. You should be able to see them in these two photos. If you imagine a line directly from the center of the crank out through the center of the cylinder, you'll see them.

Ok... so the arrow on the flywheel aligns with this arrow and the D will then be on the right where the peep hole usually is, correct?

When the arrow on the flywheel is aligned with the right (when facing the back of the engine) pointer the "D" would be in the window. Arrow aligned with the left pointer - "S" in the window.

The ring gear can be in any position. However, you need to line up the dot of the pressure plate with the line on the face of the flywheel so that the springs will drop into their "cups" in the flywheel.

Do you have a photo of the dot Charlie?

Here's one where I painted the dot. It's just a divot in one tooth, easy to miss.

Yes, after I write you I saw in in my Haynes manual. What does the TCD mark look like? I see nothing on the face, is there another on the edge?

On the outer circumference, there should be an arrow or some sort of mark stamped in. The line on the face usually just looks like a pencil mark or may not be there at all, in which case you can mark it yourself. The mark on the face is in the same place as the arrow on the edge (as seen in the first two photos).

If Luap weren't so lazy, he'd set up this site to do real-time streaming video so the rest of us could tune in and watch some of you drink beer ... erm ... I mean wrench.
