The Snell 5 year deal is a pretty good thing- for the helmet manufacturers.   :whip2:

I have many helmets!  I am currently using the Bell DLX Qualifier with the "Devil May Care" graphic.  I've always been into warbirds and it kinda goes with the new paint on the CalStone.  It has a nice "Transitions" visor that I really like.  Also wearing the Vanson Chopper jacket that a buddy of mine got too fat for before he could break it in.  Score!

That helmet would go good with my "Shark Nose" motorcycle.

I made the mistake of wearing this helmet on a long group ride.  My face was sandblasted, and my eyes couldn't take the wind over 40mph.  This is now my go-to helmet for quick store runs on the Metropolitans.  Plus it fits the kids so we can 2-up on those short trips.

This HJC FJ-17 is my primary helmet, even though it's too large (batting helmet padding added).

My favorite is the Nolan N30 but this one I use a lot. A 1950s official HD police helmet. I bought it 20 some years ago for $2 at a yard sale. Great in hot weather. You adjust for head size by the little string inside.

I have ridden in 49 states and 9 Canadian provinces with that helmet and it was never questioned.
Of course, I am sure I could be busted for it.

I was a big Shoei and Arai fan until the Dexter Ford/Brian Catterson/Motorcyclist magazine Snell approval fiasco. I started trying out value brands as a result and was surprised how companies like HJC have closed the gap on the prestige helmet brands. Presently, Im using an HJC IS-Max II with a snap-in Sena 10uPAD Bluetooth unit. It incorporates a Pinlock-ready shield, a tinted drop-down visor, fair ventilation, a removable liner, and good noise suppression. If it fits your head shape, this helmet is an extraordinarily good value at less than $200. Plus, the IS MAX II is one of just a few helmets that the Sena 10uPAD will fit. I like this setup...

I'l seconded the IS MAX II, very pleased with ours

Here’s an English police helmet, issued to my dad by the Essex Police in the early 50s. I suspect the police on both sides of the Atlantic were thicker of head in those days.
I’ve not worn this helmet since the mid 70s, and suspect I’d not get away with it now.

More relevant question would be whether this thing will actually protect your noggin when you need it to. No way I would wear a helmet like this if I am expecting to protect my head. Fashion is great but real head protection is better.

Speaking of helmets - look what the postman just dropped off:

Winthrop Mackworth Praed

Scorpion EXO R-710 - SNELL/ DOT, fiberglass/ Aramid shell, quick-release cheek pads, no-fog Ellip-Tech shield - $80 on closeout at sportbiketrackgear. com  !!

 - fits well, seems light, looking forward to wearing it "in anger" (been raining most of the week...)  Hope it's quieter than my Bell Qualifier.  That Bell was a bit of a disappointment, no offense to Brother Jim.  Build quality & durability, mostly.  I do like the fit of a Bell though, & I do have a sentimental attachment to the brand, one having saved my life & all....
Y2K Bassa - "Benedetta" (sold)
1986 Cali II - "Moose"
1977 T-3 [formerly FB] - name TBD

You might "could be" but you won't.

Have you (or anyone here) ever been busted for a non-conforming helmet?    I ride with a lot of folks, and I've never even HEARD of anyone I know being ticketed when they have a helmet on their head that looks like a helmet, like your old one does.

Sure, you can read every once in a while about someone daring the cops with a Tupperware bowl and calling it a helmet, but if it's actually a helmet, no cop is ever going to go poking around for DOT stickers or Snell certs ....

Although I must say there IS quite a "perceived risk" gap between your little helmet and someone who changes their $750 Schubert every 5 years because there might be some UV degradation of the shell or deterioration of the interior foam ... !!

A friend of my "now retired" boss was pulled over for wearing a non approved helmet.  The state trooper told him that the fine for non approved was higher than for not wearing a helmet at all, but of course you are more likely to get pulled over with no helmet.

Of course in a helmet optional state you won't get pulled over for a non approved helmet.

I wasn't there, but if I had to wager another precious pension check, I'd put it on the "non-approved" helmet in this case being a tiny, obviously-thumbing-nose-at-the-law beanie, and not a British Davida missing the USDOT sticker ... !

Just bought this one today on a smokin' closeout deal.  Can't stand the graphics but beggers can't be choosers when you have a tiny noggin like mine.  If it doesn't fit right, my 7 year old daughter can have it, or I can sell it for twice what I paid and someone will still get a good deal.

My wife has a bad time with helmets.   Her head's smaller than an XS - currently she has a 6-year-old Fulmer modular helmet, which she likes, but it's barely small enough.   I just put a metal click-latch on it to replace the "D-rings" which are a pain, and we both mounted Sena comm systems to our helmets.

We didn't want to get new helmets just prior to a month-long trip and trying to break them in away from home, but when we get back, we'll probably look for one for her that will really fit like she wants ...

You would win that wager!  For some reason novelty helmets are OK in Alabama but you better not be caught in Tennessee wearing one.  LOL!

Kentucky is helmet optional and so is Florida.  I was going down I-65 in Alabama one day and saw a guy with a ball cap on his head going to Florida from Kentucky.  He was around Montgomery and I was wondering if he was going to make it to Florida without getting pulled over.  Would be really bad if he didn't even have a helmet with him.

It's hard to find an XXS helmet in stock, let alone from a quality brand like Shoei at such a LOW price.  It's an older model but worth a look-see, I think.

My wife wears XS helmets an always finds great deals on end of season sales. She always gets these $600+  top of the line helmets with a huge discount. she has had 2 Doohan reps & a Haga rep Arai and now has a really nice Shoie and Bell. Wait until late fall and search out the bigger online retailers. they will be selling stuff for 1/2 retail in some cases.

Me, I have a XXL head and can have a hard time getting deals.

XS is much easier to find but still too large for my little braincase.
