John Day
« on: July 25, 2017, 10:23:48 AM »
I know I am a year late. Mary and I are heading to John Day and points west. Tues AM. My evil prostate kept me grounded last summer. AOK now. Planning for Olympic park and Glacier park. And North cascades. Going to be a fun trip.

395 is a great ride. An acceptable alternative is state route 19 thru Fossil. Both OR and WA have monthly breakfasts if the stars line up. Keep us updated.

When one lives in central Indiana all mountain roads out west are interesting.

A pix of one of my Uncles from Portland is in the Museum.
From the Deep Deep South out in left field.  There are no stupid questions.  There are however stupid people asking questions.  🤣, this includes me.  😉

The North Cascades Highway is epic too.  I think it's Hwy 20 if I remember right.  There's a cool old Western town to visit on the East end called Winthrop. :bike-037:
Mitchell, Oregon is great too.  You can tent camp in the city park for free and there is an excellent restaurant across the street, or at least it used to be there.  A nice cooling off creek runs through the park to boot.  Have fun!

Actually it is Hwy 20, although often locals here do the Cascades "Loop" which include Hwy 2 going clock or counterclock wise on these two great roads

I was on 20 last month.  The road was good.

[edit]  I liked between miles 300 and 250 best, but it's more for the scenery and old structures than the lie of the road.

WA breakfast is Saturday August 5, at Krain Corner, 9 am.

https://www.facebook.com/kraincornerinn

FYI, there is a forest fire north of Winthrop.  Doesn't impact Hwy 20 at all, but air quality is miserable here in Central WA. That, along with the 100F+ temps expected this weekend...ugh.

Hey there!  It was good seeing you at Deep Forest. You still in the area or are you on the road?  Pete and I will be at breakfast this weekend if you are.

I'm going to try to make it.  The ferries off Whidbey island make it difficult.

The west side is also smoky.  Up here it's BC fires.

I would say hit Fossel, and run though Heppner. then on to 395, take a right out though Ukiah to La grande out to Hat point.. Now that is a good ride..There are so many cool roads out that way.. It's my stomping grounds.(central Oregon). If you are coming out of John Day head out to the the John day river north to almost Spray, and go up 207 to get to Hepnner, and then over to 395..
