Anyone have an older BMW airhead gas cap?
« on: March 22, 2018, 12:09:40 PM »
I'm looking for the gas cap that fits most all airheads since about 1977.  These are the threaded ratcheting type that have a locking key.  They fit flush with the top of the tank when screwed into the filler hole.  There's a couple of junky looking ones on line (eBay.)  The manufacturer no longer supplies BMW with these caps, and there are no NOS replacements.

After 26 years of setting the cap on the rear luggage rack until I filled up, last fall I inadvertently re-attached the tank bag over the filler hole without replacing the cap ......... which fell off someplace during a 50 mile ride.

I have found a plastic threaded cap at Advanced Auto that does fit the threads ...... but it doesn't have the additional rubber ring designed to keep rain out of the vent holes.  I suspect I could make a ring that would work, but would prefer an original cap.  Don't care if there is a key with it, since I never locked it all the time I've owned the bike.  I'd be willing to part with up to $75.00 for a good original one.

Yes I have one but sorry it is still connected to the r75/6, with the /7 tank, unless you would like to buy the whole setup.

Might try Beemer Boneyard.  I have had success with them.

Hi, Charlie, I did buy a cap from them last year, but unfortunately it must have been for the Euro version.  As you're aware, many of the older US airheads had what BMW called the Clean Air System, with a bunch of vent hoses under the tank with solenoid switches ...... a real plumber's nightmare.  Included with that system were gas caps that screwed into the tank filler.  They are scarce.
