ATV. '98 Big Bear 350.
« on: July 18, 2018, 11:34:01 AM »
Found a decent Yamaha Big Bear in pretty good shape for a crazy-good deal.

Anyone out there owned one? Any "quirks" to look for?

The Big Bear is a great ATV. It’s a base model with a semi-auto transmission. The 350 mill is a great pairing with the trans ratios. Not a 4WD or a super-speedy model, but a good, basic 4-wheeler. I have an ‘04 Kodiak (essentially the CVT version of the Big Bear) 400 that has been solid at the farm or at the hunting lease.

Don’t use ethanol fuels or the petcock and the fuel gauge float will fail. If you just use your ATV for short rides, remember to top off the battery every two weeks or so. Your battery will thank you with long service.

This is the 4x4 model. It'd be seeing regular use for sure. Be handy for getting into areas for firewood that the tractor can't reach, plus general "fartin' around".

Good ATV. Sometimes they need front wheel bearings. And sometimes the petcock 'straw' that sticks up for ON position gas pick up falls off - so then you have no reserve and dregs can get into carb.

I'm still abusing the crap out of an 1986 honda SRX200SX (I think i got that right) I bought 20 years ago for $300.
Flush out the brakes and put in an inline clear fuel filter. It'll run forever.

Atvs are real popular here in Southern Arizona. I have had a couple of friends with big bears, and they have been bulletproof. I have had a yamaha bear tracker in the past, and currently have a grizzly 660, and a Banshee. We only buy Yamaha ATVs,as their drivetrains are the best in the industry. Its hard to find a  good deal on  any used Yamaha utility quads here, the rental /trail riding businesses buy them up. Sport quads are plentiful, and cheap though. Like someone mentioned on adding a fuel filter, great idea, especially if filled from gas cans. I think you will really like the Big Bear!
