Title: Tragic event in Bungendore.
Post by: pete roper on August 05, 2018, 08:24:13 AM
I'm currently in North America and my business has been being minded by my employee Michael while I'm away. I just got news that he was seriously injured in a bike accident on Friday night. Serious enough that he was airlifted to Sydney and although he's conscious he has severe back injuries and the prognosis isn't wonderful as far as I can make out. Any which way he isn't going to be working on anything but getting well for a long time.

As it is I don't think there is anything in the workshop that can't wait but if needs be I'll cut my holiday short and fly home but if anybody urgently needs to contact me the best way is email.

motomoda.roper(ampersand)gmail.com

Hope the mods are OK with me clogging up the board with this but it seemed like a good way of getting the word out.

Pete

First, best wishes for a speedy recovery for Michael. So sorry to hear of a rider going down.

I'm sure this important news is well more than forum worthy.

Best wishes for things working out.

Adding, please keep us updated on the healing process and your coping with the situation.

Wow, that's not good. Don't cut your holiday short, customers will wait. You'll be going back to work, so much for semi-retirement. Hope Michael gets back soon all healed up.

Not the kind of thing you want to hear on vacation or anytime.....

Hope your friend Michael heals well and gets back to what he enjoys doing.

News is still scant, although I've enlisted the help of one of my other customers, the woman who bought my V7 Racer, Pippa, (She's a cop so is affectionately known as Pippa Pig.) is trying to find out details by asking her NSW counterparts what they know and feeding back to me.

It seems there may of been a bloody kangaroo involved, (The reason I NEVER ride after dark!) but apart from that.....

Latest report I heard second hand from Craig, who posts here as 'Clancy' from time to time is that things are grim but not terminal in terms of recovery.

Shit, bugger, arse....etc.

I went to Michael’s place today and spent some time with his mother.
Unfortunately there’s not much news to pass on.
Michael was air lifted from Canberra to Sydney on Friday night.
On Saturday he underwent surgery for 6 hrs and has been in ICU since.
Even a positive outcome is going to take a long recovery.

He was found Friday night when someone stopped to investigate his motorcycle lying on its side with the lights on.
He has no memory of what happened.
I know it was raining that night but have no idea if that had anything to do with his accident.
At this point no other vehicles seem to have been involved.

That’s about all I can tell you.

We all hate to hear this sort of thing. At the same time there are no better wishes than those coming from motorcyclists.  Good fortune to Michael and his family
Hang on Pete. You've got good people around you, even if they're half a world away.  R3~

Hi Peter, I was very concerned to hear of Michaels injuries and hope very much for a positive outcome. He is a valued employee of Mota Moda,he met me me at the workshop and within 1 hour had my claim for roller upgrade in to Piaggio. It appears as though Skippy may have been involved. Regards to you and Michaels family.

Just an update on this. I just received an email from him, he has just had his broken collar bone pinned, (Didn't even know about that!) and has regained some feeling in his left side although his right side is still numb and functionless below the chest.

Hopefully things will continue to improve but there's a long haul ahead.

Still no real idea what happened but the collar bone would suggest he lost the front and then the tyre bit again. That usually chucks you over the high side and often snaps a collar bone.

Or something.

Not a good idea Peter, certainly not yet. He’s got a lot of healing to do before he gets deluged by visitors he doesn’t know.

So for anyone who's interested...

Then there's this knob jockey.

Jude and I drove up to Sydney to visit him yesterday and all things being equal he was pretty upbeat. He dragged us out to the pub and we had a good chat about his and the business's future and he's getting some sensation back. Left side better than the right but he dropped his phone on his nuts the other day and said he definitely felt that OK!

Obviously there are a lot of hard yards ahead but it's early days and the return of feeling, even if not accompanied yet by movement, is a good thing.

One thing that is good is that as part of our rego/insurance there is a levy we pay. While we may moan about it it does cover Michael for lifetime disability! Not only will it cover alterations to his abode but also his workshop so, as far as possible, he will be able to continue to work and contribute! I'll never moan about that levy again!

Anyway, given my mates all seem to be smashing themselves up I think I'd better go out and organise Michael and Mark some 'Gang' T Shirts. I think we should call them the 'Crips'!
