(NGC) -John Prine
« on: October 01, 2018, 08:15:16 PM »
Due to early childhood multiple ear infections I was left with hearing damage that makes discriminating sounds a challenge. I cannot understand the lyrics to most songs but John Prine is one of the exceptions. Was listening to him tonight and he caused me to tear up.

Probably the greatest modern song writer

No question!

Back in the day, when his first album came out, Rolling Stone hailed him as the next Bob Dylan. I bought it, but at that time he was too "country" for me.
Since then, I've come to appreciate his music, and have several records and CDs, but IMHO, Bob Dylan he ain't.
Dorcia doesn't like him very well, though.. some of the pictures he paints are a little too graphic or melancholy for her.
Just the same, she went to a concert in Indy with me a few years ago and enjoyed it.
I'd say he is one of the few great modern song writers..

John Prine is a long time favorite of mine. Ive seen him a bunch, but my favorite show was at Poughkeepsies 1894 Bardevon Theater. I think he played every song he ever wrote...and the entire audience joined in. Prine has written a bunch of fun compositions, but I like his poignant stuff best: Christmas in Prison and Blue Umbrella come to mind. Great post, John.

I've been a Prine fanatic for close to half a century,,, that's a scarey thought, lol.

I hadn't heard this tune before, it's a beautiful song,,, I've already snagged a tab and will be adding it to my song list.

... IMHO, Bob Dylan he ain't.

Well, at least John Prine only puts his name on stuff that he wrote himself, as far as I know.

Don't get too mad. I learned all of Dylan's old songs by heart, but I'm getting tired of reading about his theft of material. Even his Nobel acceptance speech was partly cribbed from the modern day version of Cliff Notes (SparkNotes?), I read.

I'm close to agreeing Prine is the better of the two, and therefore, of course, the best of all.

Not better or woorse, just different. Dylan is more of a poet as far as I'm concerned. He's no singer! But I like his music!

Oh, yeah he is. Many covers of his songs are just vanilla to me. When he tells me something, I believe it..there is some serious emotion behind it.

I couldn't agree more. Dylan himself says he is basically a singer. Woody Guthrie, lying on his deathbed, opined that Dylan was a better singer than a songwriter. Nobody sings his songs half as well as he does.
