three waterfalls and three reactions [photographs]
« on: August 28, 2016, 07:27:37 PM »
The first two are two of the larger falls in Europe; the third stands alone as the most powerful.  Note the people for a size-reference.

Yeah; it's pretty much only a matter of scale.  Otherwise, they're all mostly the same.  Here's Kansas:

(Most of the other ones in Kansas are really just low dams to provide water for the old mill)

It's an eerie feeling to be at the top of something like Niagra and stand next to the water rushing by....and then think about how much water is flowing....for centuries.

Then think about how tough it is to stand up in a fast flowing stream at hip depth (if you can even get that far in).  No wonder water shapes the earth.

In the case of Niagra, they let it flow like it did for centuries only one day per year.  Normally the daytime flow is about 1/2 the natural flow, and the nighttime flow is 1/4.  The rest goes to the power plant, so they get hydroelectric power, and keep the falls from eroding upstream like it used to.

Beautiful photos, Daniel.

Here's a contribution, Fall Creek Falls, TN, a place I've enjoyed visiting twice.  It's the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi, or at least one of the ones that's argued to be the highest.  The first time I was a kid, and it was the 4th of July weekend.  We camped next to some young guys who rode in on motorcycles.  One with a big bushy beard was on a new loop Guzzi, and had a tag under his license plate that said "Fuzzy's Guzzi"  It was the first Guzzi I saw, and the reason I eventually bought one.

Great photos Daniel, as always! :thumb:   Here are the last two cool waterfalls I experienced:

1. Horsetail Falls in Oregon, along the Columbia River (last 3 photos)

2. The 16-story "indoor" rain forest water falls at the Garden-By-The-Bay" in Singapore (First photo)

Great topic, Daniel, and the photos, too.

Two views of Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis.

#1, from earlier this summer.

#2, from a few years ago.  (An HDR composite of 4 photos.)

And like Brad, a view of High Falls on the Pigeon River, Grand Portage State Park, taken back in April of this year during the ice melt.  The flow was so heavy that the valley was quite limited in view from water spray.  There is still plenty of ice on the left and right banks.

And from a nearby vantage point.

Great photos and a get-you-thinking-about-a-ride travelogue.

And the Niagara is still flowing just as much water as it always did, but we're stealing some gravitational potential energy from some of it ..... !

I follow Daniel's advice.  Pick a good subject, get a decent angle and the camera (my phone) doesn't matter much.  Oh, and if you can pick good lighting conditions even better.

Good photographers, people like RK and Daniel can make a horrible subject look beautiful.
