V7-II first map upload.
« on: April 13, 2016, 09:55:11 PM »
Craig, who goes by 'Clancy' here bought his V7-II out for its 10,000 service this morning and had volunteered to be the Guinea pig for the first upload of Mark's first MUIG3 map. Mark had freely admitted that the numbers were 'Pulled out of his arse' and were built on experience rather than logging which we'll hopefully get to soon but even so the results have been good.

I'll let Craig give his opinions as my ride was only a quick squirt up the road but idle is stable as the stepper isn't playing 'Make me lean enough to stall' and then panicking. And the engine is smoother throughout the range.

Always good when a plan comes together. :thumb:

Pete, is there any upgrade for the Breva? I know when you put the machine on it last time you said that Guzzi got it pretty much right. Goes shit hot anyway.

Breva uses 15M reader and writer have been available for yonks. 15M is a pretty simple device AFAIK.

Ok, we're only 24hrs into this map but I'll give a first impression.

Best to start with the "before" and then talk about the "after".

My bike tells me quite clearly that its happy spot is around 4200.
Its more than happy to rev higher, but this is where it wants to cruise.
Depending on the gear, this puts me pretty much dead on 50/70/90 km/hr.
For speed limits of 60/80 I keep the same gear and ride around 3800, but the throttle is a little snatchy.
'Cold' starts haven't been the best in the 11 months I've had it, but I've gotten used to them.
The big killer has been 'warm' starts, where the bike has been ridden then left for 1-3 hrs and ridden again.
These have been hideous at times.
Now to be fair, in the last half of summer the 'cold' starts have been totally fine, but I've only been doing beginning & end of day starts, so I can't say if the 'warm' start issues have continued.

Yesterday Pete put Beetle's tweaked map in.
The bike had been already been run for a couple of minutes after the 10K service was completed, but had sat for an hour while we pfaffed around with computers.
After download it fired up and purred.
The first thing I said to Pete was "well that's smoother!"
After the maps usual warm up period I was expecting the idle to drop & lug like normal, but it just kept purring.

So out on the open road and...I'm sorry but it's the same description - Smooth.
Under 4000 there's no snatchiness or pulsing.
You can leave the bike in gear and go below 3000, and still smoothly pull away easily.
The engine seems to have lost its 'notch' of happiness around 4200.
Instead its seems to be genuinly happy to cruise anywhere between 4000 & 5000, and I found myself cruising around the higher value.
Accelerating quickly is also...you guessed it...smooth.

For this mornings's (12*C) start I decided not to do my normal warmup before leaving.
Hopped on, pressed the button and accelerated away.
No burps, farts or stalls.
The ride is was lovely and....smooth

Got a family trip this weekend so I won't be able to take the bike out on a long ride.
Will get back to you about this again in a week or so.

Cheers
Craig

Good feedback. Thank you.

Mark will probably explain more if anyone's interested but the V7-II has two maps a hot map and a cold map. From our discussion it seems that Mark altered the fuel maps very little, if at all. It was the correction tables, most particularly fuel/air temp correction table, that were changed to achieve this result.

The next step is to do some logging. After we get back from the Flinders I'll pull my logging kit off my bike which is as good as I will ever need it and we can start on Craig's bike and then move onto other single TB iteration V7's afterwards.

Nice first result though. Note no absurd promises are made about *More Power*!

Craig dropped his plugs off today after the map upload. I reckon Mark's flunked it, they look good, really good! I forgot to take pics, we'll do that tomorrow.

This is the best I could do - the phone camera wouldn't focus if I got any closer (sorry).
I've done 500+km on these new plugs after the map upload.

Don't know what more I can add to my initial impression.
I've done traffic, tight country curves & freeways and I'm really happy with the way the bike behaves & responds.
It's not that the character of the bike has changed, it just rolls on/off & cruises happier.
And the embarrassing 'warm start' issues haven't shown themselves!
For that alone I owe Mark a session at the pub  :boozing:

Flunked it you say? I'll have you know that years of experience and an in-depth knowledge of fuel injection and Moto Guzzi's went into the whole 7 minutes it took to build that map.  :violent1:

Mark makes a good point there, when someone does a job and it looks easy, often it is not because it is but the knowledge and skill developed over years that make it seem so. This forum in particular helps me identify and appreciate them.

Sorry, auto correct  I meant 'Fluked' it!

Craig, I'll grab some pics tomorrow, yours don't show a lot, you really need them 'End On' as it were. They look remarkably good. Obviously they reflect the general gamut of your riding rather than individual throttle points but they are clearly indicating a good overall burn.

What do I need to do to get my hands on one of these maps?

I´m more than happy to pay for it.

I´m guessing it´s based on a US map, would it work on a European model?

Nah, the software is European and the map is Australian. Read up on Guzzidiag and then contact 'Beetle'.

Been meaning to give an update on this, thanks for the prompt.
Put simply, the bike is running great and I've experienced no issues, old or new.

After a couple of days of the new map I stopped noticing the difference - it just felt normal, like it should have always been.

As far as I can tell so far, the fuel consumption hasn't changed.

Winter has finally arrived so I might pull the plugs again after next week and see how it's going with the "Canberra Cold" mornings.

I'm using the bike daily with both long & short periods between starts and those old problems starting/running problems have not returned.

Big thumbs up!

PS. Sorry I haven't dropped the MM off yet
PPS. Can you make it have 10 more ponies.........(running for cover)

As soon as I get mine sorted (dealer arguing with Piaggio at the moment), I'll try it with an Agostini 2-1 setup.  I bet it does just fine.

Yes. It will cost bulk $$ and require a ritual you may find..unpleasant. Plus the deed to your ranch. Non refundable, of course.
