Im assuming you meant DL since you asked about the 650 and the 1000. They V-Strom is among the very best all road travel bikes ever made. Absolutely bullet proof with an enormous after market. Theyre more of a beginning platform for personalization than a finished product but theyre so inexpensive that it doesnt matter.
I just sold a 2013 DL650 very clean new tires and 19,000 miles. I was happy to get it.
all above is true. I owned a 2000 SV 650, 2003 SV 1000, 2005 DL 650. all great but very boring products. It has amazed me how a MFG. can depersonalise a V twin so effectively! And in the case of the 1000 decrease it's horsepower every time they change it. They are the Honda Civic and accord of the motorcycle industry.
.....It DOES sound like the kind of bike I want to try. I was leaning immediately toward the 1000, but the 650 sounds ultimately just as satisfying, and lighter to boot....
The DR650 (and the pre-2007 KLR650) have been on my radar for a long time, just been biding my time and waiting for the right one at the right price to come by. Always wanted one, don't care which... the big displacement thumper itch grows with every passing year.
I am still intrigued by them, but I'm beginning to notice the mass of plastic and shrouding forward/under where the traditional gas tank would be. Just LOOKS forward-heavy and massive, I suppose you wouldn't notice it while riding. No different than a Stelvio or any number of other modern "adventure" bikes.
Suzuki's claimed curb weight for the 2017/2018 is 470 lbs, that is with all fluids including 5.3 US gallons of gas.It feels light and zippy when riding it.
