Some Help. '72 850 Rear Drive Screw Lock For Needle Bearing.
« on: August 27, 2016, 09:43:26 PM »
This is on a '72 Eldo rear drive.

I'm not sure on how to re-lock the flat head screw to it's locking tab that locks the needle bearing into it's space??

I tried to bend what I thought were tabs in the slot for the screw driver flat out of the way. No go. Only way I removed this assembly was to bend the tabs of the lock plate up and turn the screw.

Now I need to re-lock the screw to the plate. How?

Once I understand how to lock the screw, I plan to just bend the tabs back down or do I need to replace the screw and lock plate?

Thank you!!

I remove and install that screw with an impact driver.

It's peened to lock it in place from the factory, I use thread locker on it during installation. I'd bend the plate back into shape before installation.

Charlie,

So I just need to add some thread locker and then tap/whack the ends of the slot for the screw driver back down with a center punch or the like to lock it into the holes in the lock tab??

Thanks again!

That's basically how I do it. Interestingly the retainer was deleted on later boxes and on them it's not uncommon for the bearing outer race to float. Never seems to cause a problem.... (shrug.)

Not only was the retainer deleted on later models, there was also a re-design of the drive hub. The newer hubs had a shoulder added (or maybe a longer shoulder, without two in hand to compare) which helps keep the bearing race from floating out of place. On early designs the race could basically slide right on out without the retainer in place. So, I would be reluctant to use an early hub on a later box that doesn't use the retainer.  Anyhow that's my take on it, FWIW.

The race on this one did just slide out.

Removed all this stuff to get to the inner seal which may or may not have been leaking. Sure looked dry between the seal and the case. On the bright side the bearing and gears look great!

Now to get the seal all the way seated without removing the tube. My socket only went down so far and I don't want to remove the tube as it looks like it may not center itself? Still scrounging for something in the garage the size of the outer edge of the seal. I may just go with a punch and gently tap it down.

Thanks for the help!!
