Landscaping question about crush gravel

I am planning to renew the gravel in the parking area of my yard and up the path from the house to the shop. The parking area is flat so a 2 inch bed would seem to be enough. The path has a short but steep pitch about half way (its only 75 feet to the shop).
This area could use 4 inches deep to infill holes dug by the dogs and the constant foot traffic.
For the path; would it make a difference to put it down in layers or is it still shallow enough that one spread is adequate?
Do I need to rent a commercial packer or will a cement roller I used for trail preparation do (6 feet wide, with 4 ten inch tubes on an axel filled with cement : probably 100 pounds each).
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I did ours with it and its fantastic. I can push and turn my B11 around on it easily - PLUS it still looks like a gravel drive

Well worth the extra cost.

We have some stuff here called FXG which is dolomite rock which also has some crusher dust and clay in it. Rake it out, wet it and then compact it. I t sets like concrete and the grip is amazing. It takes a fair bit of rain as well. Not good with bare feet though!

Called "crusher run" at the local quarries.   Cheap, but you have to spread it by hand, it won't spread like #57 gravel from the back of a dump body.

I have 3/4 mile of driveway - I patch the holes with crusher run, then a light coat of gravel over it.

That stuff looks amazing. Pricey though.... It would be 3k$ just for the walk way to the shop.
I will certainly look at it for the sloped section as that is the problematic part.

     My brother had a similar need on a sloped walkway to his garage and ended up getting his hands on some fiberglass grating and used it under his crushed Granite, 3/8 minus I believe. Worked great The type of grating I'm referring to is used on mezzanines and in industrial plants.

I would suggest crushed limestone for your application. It stabilizes your soil and won’t spread out under weight like river gravel. Remember to order 50% extra for compaction. Adding some Mason’s Sand will help hold the gravel where you want it. In addition to structural superiority, Limestone is pretty to look at (it turns white over time) and will allow rainwater to get down to your aquifer.

It is good stuff

If you're careful you can lay it and then back the loaded tipper over it, crack the tail gate and spread the gravel straight where you need it

I'm sure that there will be equivalents closer to home and don't go heavier than you need I ended up with the light wight black one

I have used allot of decomposed granite on my place in CA. It is small grain and easy to ride on. Cheap here and lasts long ,works well.
