Why do I see this ?    Unicode something or other.  UTF-8  how do I fix it? Seems only on Wildguzzi and only on this PC.

Its from an iPhone or other device, it changes the apostrophe symbol to question mark when published here, same with other punctuation symbols.
it also happens if I compose in text edit or other apps then copy paste here.

It's not just here, but I see it on similar discussion sites.  I think it has to do with a particular website software.

The PHP WG is written uses ISO-8859-1, and the characters are being interpreted as UTF-8. You need to tell your browser to use ISO-8859-1 when on WG.

somewhere buried in one of the threads was how one goes about getting your browser out of no punctuation mode.  It did it and it worked, for a bit, but now is back to hyphen is a question mark mode.  If some body knows that of has the link to that it might make a good sticky...

...now is back to hyphen is a question mark

It isn't a problem with punctuation; it's a problem with the higher-level ascii characters and your browser.  Likely, somebody has used an em-dash instead of a minus sign for a hyphen, so your browser is confused and just shows a generic "I don't know what goes here" symbol (which on your browser is apparently a question mark--I'm guessing in a black diamond).

It would especially show up if somebody copies their input from a word processor program and isn't typing it directly into wildguzzi.com.

You might try looking for "compatibility mode" in your settings and playing with that.

It happens to me when I post/reply using my iphone safari. Now I've learned to not use ' " and things like that when I post using my phone, or edit the post once I get to the computer to clean it up.

I don't know if there is a way around. If there is, I'd like to know.

I think Apple had a glitch back about OS11 that did that with the letter I.  They came out with a fix for it in a short time but maybe it is reappearing in a different form.  The quick fix would be to not use an iphone for posting.

Turn automatic dash formatting off or on

You can turn off automatic formatting of dashes in the Settings app on your device. Changing the setting doesn’t affect existing hyphens and dashes in your document, only new text that you type.

Note: This setting applies to other apps on your device that you use to enter text.

Tap Settings on the Home screen, then tap General.

Tap Keyboard, then tap Smart Punctuation.

Tip: To use different formatting for specific text, change the setting, type the text, then change the setting back.

OK, research tells me this is what it is

The replacement character (often a black diamond with a white question mark or an empty square box) is a symbol found in the Unicode standard at code point U+FFFD in the Specials table. It is used to indicate problems when a system is unable to render a stream of data to a correct symbol. It is usually seen when the data is invalid and does not match any character:

Now who knows what to do about it? :undecided:

Sure it does!  It is an ipad/iphone problem probably due to a unicode setting somewhere.  The question is where?

That works for desktop browsers. For iOS, you need to turn off Smart Punctuation.

Well, I've tried it. Now let's find out if it works. It's cured one problem already. I can now type, for instance, I'll, and it'll show the I in upper case. It had been showing in lower case, with the next word starting with a capital. And hey, it looks to be working. I'll just keep on typing till I get bored. How is everyone? I'm well. And what's the weather like where you are? The heatwave seems to be over here. Oh, okay, I'll stop now. Problem cured. Thanks for your help, Stucorpe.
