Anyone Know This Guzzi?
« on: August 16, 2018, 03:57:27 AM »
This US import popped up on Aussie ebay recently...

They want way too much for it ($22,500 AU) but someone obviously spent a lot of time and money on it. It's an interesting mix of a round barrel Tonti with Daytona bodywork. Anyone know the history of this Guzzi?

This is a 1981 Moto Guzzi CX100
It is 1000cc round barrel, with Tonti frame and has been extensively and professionally customized
1000's of hours and dollars have been spent, it is a one off and highly unique
Imported from the USA with import approval and documents
Following is a list of some of the work done:
  • Bodywork is genuine and original Guzzi Daytona
  • Suzuki GSXR front forks
  • Ohlins rear shocks
  • Front rotors and calipers Suzuki
  • Wheels are Suzuki front and rear

Engine work:
  • High compression pistons
  • Raceco ported heads with twin plugs
  • Raceco 390 lift cams
  • Kehin CR Flat slide carbs
  • 2:1 stainless exhaust system
  • Carbon fiber muffler
  • Falicon crankshaft
  • Gear driven cams
  • Dyna Ignition

We had a forum topic on this bike a few years ago when on EBay here. Not very many positive comments if I remember correctly, but I guess some Aussie was impressed!

Personally I think it's hideous, neither fish not fowl

Now am I missing something here, gear driven cams? When I last stripped a big block (albeit a square head) it had only one cam shaft, I guess the reference is to each individual cam, it would be interesting if they were different on each cylinder

Gear driven cams, perhaps a reference to gears being installed instead of the stock timing chain, unless they were a steel set I'd be running in the opposite direction (YMMV)

This bike was built by a shop in Fort Lauderdale owned by a local attorney. The builder is a talented machinist but not in charge of color choices.

I was just surprised it was imported into Australia because custom Guzzis are such a niche market out here. And as you say, Daytona bodywork on a Tonti frame narrows the appeal even further. I suspect it will hang around unsold until the price drops significantly. But then who knows because there are over 50 watchers on the auction so far.

The firm that imported it also imported this VMax from the USA so their buyer must have oddball tastes
It's interesting that the paintwork on the VMax is similar in style to the Guzzi - same original owner?

Y'all are worried about paint and fiberglass? I'm not riding it with missing frame rails. Tonti put them there for a reason.....

Not surprised that Guzzi is from Florida. Says Smyrna on the tail. New Smyrna is just south of Daytona. And Falicon crankshafts is from Clearwater.

I can put up with everything but the yellow and the missing frame rails. The 948 motor is a treat!
