I Need cheap shocks for my 2003 Stone please.
« on: August 16, 2018, 06:29:53 PM »
My orange turd is 14 years old and needs some cheap shocks. I don't want to pay a lot since the bike is only worth a couple bucks, haha! Thanks for your wisdom, peace.

I have a set taken off a Jackal when it was new. They're just sitting in a drawer in my shop. No weeping and chrome is great. $100 shipped in the USA. Contact me if interested. I'll be out of town much of tomorrow but home late tomorrow evening.

Harley big twin air shocks are pretty easy to adapt.. I think you just need different bushings? $50-75 on ebay if you watch.

Progressive 412 series is a common Harley shock.  About $300 new, shipped.  Harley bushings are often 5/8 v the half-inch of the Guzzi.  Also, some of their eyelets are wider than the Guzzi lug is long.  So if you buy them blind you might have a poor fit.

The Ikons are a good budget shock and with the current exchange rate I'd think they'd be a bargain.

I like to call Dave Quinn Motorcyles for a pair of Hagon shocks set up for you. He’ll ask a few questions like your weight, if you have luggage & how much stuff you normally pack, how often you have a passenger & so on. Plus they are cheaper than most shocks. I’m thinking around $250.00 delivered.

I'll second the progressive 412's or Harley FLH take off shocks.

IIRC Harpers used to sell the Progressives.

As a matter of fact I have a set on my Sportster right now from Harper's that started life on my Jackal.

Progressives came with an assortment of replaceable brass bushings to size the eyelets appropriately. Yes the Harley stuff is not otherwise a direct bolt on, but it's close an can be made to work.

Yes ,and Hagon LLC USA has closed up...You can buy Hagons from the their UK website, they are about 200 bucks with springs....shipping about 30 bucks I believe...Hagons are nitrogen filled and good value for the money, provided you pay less than $250  total... Progressive may or may not be better for a slightly higher price...

I should have added "and they might still".

Hard to argue with the price.

or your testimony that they've been acceptable to you on a Jackal and a Sportster. I'm eyeing them.

Having said ALL that... to the OP, if what you need is to freshen the ride for as little output as possible and still do it 'right', I can't imagine you can beat this offer. OEM and ready to bolt on, not great shocks, but they keep you riding.

I have a set taken off a Jackal when it was new. They're just sitting in a drawer in my shop. No weeping and chrome is great. $100 shipped in the USA. Contact me if interested. I'll be out of town much of tomorrow but home late tomorrow evening.

It took 5,000 miles of riding before the Dave Quinn Hagon came close to resembling a shock.  The stiction would hold prevent smooth operations even with to much preload.  I sprayed chain lube on them before every ride.  They are finally rebounding.  I use ball eye swivel in place of the rubber bushing to prevent binding at the mounting points.  I would go with the H.D. shocks.  Go Guzzi owner cheap.

I used the oem washers as spacers.  I had to sand the shoulder down on a belt sander to get the right stack height.  On my set up (Magni swingarm), I needed two different I.D.'s because the bottom mounts are different o.d. from gear box side compared to left swing arm side.  Your may be different.

The usual rubber bushing does not allow a shock to swivel around the mounting stud freely and adds resistances to the shock movement.  The swivel balls allow the shock to move freely.  This is a common set up on many high end shocks.  I occasionally spray a shot of chain lube on the shock eyes.

They have been "acceptable" for sure, especially on the Sporty (think how bad the OEM's were).

But full disclosure. When I took them off the Jackal and replaced them with a set of YSS's for more money I was kicking myself for not doing it sooner.

So the Progressive's MIGHT be worth it in the cheap, but if the Hagons are cheaper i might go that way.

I wouldn't go for the OEM take offs, they were truly useless.

Because some people are Divas, one man's junk is another man's treasure. Also they're coming off of 800-900# beasts, maybe they're a little under sprung to some, but match better on a 600# beast.

Or some people are cheap and don't know any better.

Well I guess it depends on perspective.

If you think you're smarter than everyone else, that's probably a tempting thing to say to yourself.

But if you realize that there's a giant sliding scale of things people want from their bikes, of balancing comfort and performance, cost and ability, that what works for one person and bike might not physically work for the next person and bike etc. You might realize that one size doesn't fit all or conversely doesn't not fit all.
