Comparing Exhaust Makers
« on: December 14, 2017, 05:55:08 PM »
If you have the experience to compare the usual suspects for Guzzi exhausts, do you have an overall favorite for best quality/value?
I'm currently running a Zard on my Griso and like it, but it's the only one I've tried. Still running the stocker on my Norge.
Zard, Ago, Lafranconi, Termi, Mistral, Arrow, am I missing any of the Italians?
Are there non-Italians worth considering for the newer Guzzis?
Who is your favorite? Have any of them ever disappointed you?

NB some of these I have not had on Guzzi's Leo Vinci are pretty good IMO Quat D or QD another Italian manufacturer although haven't had much experience on most of the Guzzi's have had Termi's which have always been nicely made although some made under the Ducati Corse label seem to be a bit hit and miss. Biggest disappointment Akrophobic sp? while not inherently badly made I do not understand what all the fuss is about and the set I have on an Aprilia would not be what I consider the product of a top line manufacturer.

Akrophobic sp?

Akrapovic, pronounced A-Crap-O-Vitch, the Slovenian exhaust manufacturer.

Otherwise, the best manufacturer of a given Guzzi depends I think on the bike and its era.  LaFranconi quality is typically first rate, as you'd expect for an OEM supplier. You missed Stucchi, which produced some nice stuff.

A-Crap,

Sums up my opinion of them, cheers! They are a bit flavour of the decade in the sports bike crowd currently before that is was Yoshimura which were pretty good buy all accounts, maybe I should fit one to a Guzzi!

I wasn't having fun with the name, that's how its properly pronounced despite people butchering it in every possible way.

SIL Motor is yet another Italian exhaust manufacturer.

Possibly a-crop-o-vitch, as opposed to the short "a" sound.

I have a Staintune on my Breva 1100. I have no empirical data that it does anything positive or negative for my bike but I like the looks and the sound and that it does not have to be repacked as some cans do.

But, a member on here with VASTLY more knowledge than me on the subject has said he doesn't like Staintune exhausts.

I was taught to pronounce the name by a Slovenian girlfriend, in Slovenia

I like Staintune exhausts and have a couple.  The only issues IMHO are very high cost and (oddly enough given the name) that highly polished stainless steel stains quickly and you have to keep after it to maintain the original appearance.

Probably me Peter. I am somewhat ambivalent about the Staintune offerings for *Modern* Guzzis they just seem to be a generic *Can* adopted for use on the Guzzi. Having said that I have one on the Stelvio because that's what it came with and its quiet enough and works OK so I can't complain about it.

By choice I prefer Mistral products.

I've been very pleased with the Mistral Classic silencers and stainless h-pipe on my Vintage. Well made and easy to look at, they are shaped like the stock LaFranconis but about 20% smaller. It allows just the right amount of exhaust report through...throaty and potent, as a Big-Block should sound. They do require re-tuning, however. Put aside some extra coin...

Mistrals are on the Vintage on the left...

I may have been too soon in the game with Staintune; likely 40 years ago. As mentioned previously, herein by others. I had rust just from damp conditions. I could not keep up with how quickly they turned a spotted dark brown. Probably a lesser grade of 'stainless'. 304 ? R100S. I try not to get screwed more than one time from any supplier.  R3~

I like a Mistral. When they fall off at 160km/h, you simply re-attach and be on your way.

The only manufacturer  I have experience with as far as the after market exhaust systems is the MISTRAL.  I recently replaced the crossover 3rd muffler on my 07 Calvin. The minstrel H Pipe is a well built heavy duty part with precise welds and heavy stainless steel was used. The angles were precise making the installation easy and leak free. I figured I’d that part is of such quality anything else they make will be great quality.

I have a QD on the 1200Sport.  There wasn't a stocking US distributor when I was looking (2010 I think. . .) so I ordered direct from Italy.
It has the DB killer, and I like the tone & volume.  It's neighborhood friendly.  I tried it briefly without the baffle, and it was just a little anti-social for my taste.  Aside from dropping a lot of weight and eliminating the 1,000degree leg roaster that came standard and improving the tone, my seat-of-the-pants'ometer thinks it's about equal HP and fuel consumption.
