1994 California 1100 With Carbs - Which Ignition?
« on: June 24, 2018, 02:37:26 PM »
Hi, folks.

A friend of mine is considering a '94 1100 with carbs, and I am not that familiar with that era of bikes.  Can anyone confirm what type of ignition module this will use?  I've been searching, but don't seem to be getting anywhere.

Thanks,
Shaun

I'm pretty sure that will be the great medium valve engine with Digiplex ignition.  :thumb:

Thanks, gentlemen.  Unfortunately, I didn't have the book and didn't realize it was so easy to find online.  Appreciate your help!

Cheers,

You can.. but it won't die. The Digiplex is/was very dependable.

Yeah, probably.  Hopefully the Digiplex in a '94 is better.   My '93 Strada and '93 Cali 1100 both have retrofitted w/points.

My Cali 3 was a 93 and it had a motoplat which failed. Fitted points and never had to touch it again  over the next 90K I did before I sold it.

Never had a problem with the Digiplex in either my 1000S or SPIII, but I do have a back up box because I have heard for years that they are junk.

The DigiPlex in my 1994 Cali generally just worked. Once I had an issue where it appeared to be the DigiPlex. It was a poor relay contact that must have been 'bouncing' or something, scrambling the DigiPlex brain. A simple relay replacement fixed it. The new owner called me from Florida last year. Same issue. Replacing the relay fixed it again.

Yeah, the "sidestand" relay (even thought it doesn't have a sidestand switch)  powers the coils and Digiplex. The sidestand relay is grounded through the low fuel light sensor. Don't ask me how I know..

Not to hijack this but......

Hi Chuck
What were the symptoms of the bad relay?
Could some of my bad 1/8 open throttle be that?
I'm going from geezer memory so.......
standing on the left side of the bike looking at the 4 relays,
far right (back) is starter?, next forward is lights? next 2 are??
Ive replaced starter and lights.
Thanks
Paul

Symptoms? It wouldn't run. On my bike, the sidestand relay was the aft one in the stack. The relay that powers everything was up by the fuse block.

On my California, the relay was passing power to the ignition box when measured, but the ignition would only occasionally fire.

My 94 California relays all matched Pyro Dan's relays.

Must be different. Guzzi? Shirley not.  The 93 Strada with Digiplex used the big expen$ive relays.
