Advice on an Action Cam for Motorcycling
« on: November 28, 2015, 02:37:59 PM »
I would appreciate so recommendations for purchasing an action cam for motorcycling for my girlfriend.

I have a GoPro 4 but she doesn't like it because it's complicated to use(true) and it's big compared to some of the smaller competitors out there.

She wants something that's small and easy to use. Price is not a prime consideration and it doesn't have to be the ultimate in resolution either.

Thanks!

Have you looked at the hero 4 Session? One button rec. and I think they simplified the menu. Plus they are not complicated if you use the phone app. Instead of the tiny GoPro buttons.

I received a Tachyon camera as a gift a couple years ago. It's small, light weight, and pretty easy to use. And, it's probably inexpensive. Good enough for me.

I use the Innova and the nice thing about it is the lens is detached from the controller and therefore is very small and can be mounted almost anywhere, including on your helmet.

Many thousands of miles on it, works flawlessly. Super easy to use.

I think a good camera will have these features...

- waterproof w/o a case.
- replaceable battery that won't brick your camera.
- 1080p 30 fps minimum.
- lots of mounting choices
- quality components.
- up-date-able firmware.

I'd check out the Garmin Virb line...

I use a Contour. Made in USA, great quality video, no housing needed.

I'd consider the Sena.  They have a bluetooth headset with a camera integrated into it.

I am considering the Contour, since I already have another brand headset.

Charlie: One thing nice about the Contour is the lens will rotate, so you can have the video level even if the camera is not mounted square to the helmet. I have one that's several years old. I like the operation better than a very old GoPro I have, but I think the video quality of the Contour could be better. Dunno about the newer ones.

As far as I can tell the Contours have been discontinued. They seem to have closed up shop. It's unfortunate because it looked to be a good option.

If she owns a cell phone with a decent camera, I think it's a real option. If she wants a wide angle image, there are inexpensive lens add-ons that would achieve that, and there are lots of options for mounts.

Don't know if you're using the GoPro Hero4 Black or Silver, but the latter has a screen that simplifies operation. Also, GoPro has a new model out that is more compact as well as less expensive.

Where are you seeing that? They were purchased by an investment group a year or so ago and recently merged with Ion, but I don't see where they've folded.

Their website is still up and cranking.

First time I used a GoPro on my dirt bike I looped the bike on a hill-climb and broke a rear fender. I was thinking about the movie instead of the terrain... and I'm pretty sure any footage I took on a street bike would be incriminating.

Therefore, my advice is: If you're going to use one focus on your riding, not on making movies. Also, the "sport" setting for a video camera is "off."
