Title: V1000-G5...who has one?
Post by: JohninVT` on December 14, 2011, 05:31:41 AM
It seems like the G5 gets no love.  I've wanted one for a while and I'm curious why so few people seem to have them.  Are they relatively rare or do they posess flaws I'm not aware of?  I probably see a dozen SP's for every one G5 on Craigslist and Ebay.  A G5 set up exactly like the one below with a set of floorboards would meet my current Guzzi needs perfectly.

One of my buddies has one. Escentially, it is a convert with a manual transmission. He loves it. No complaints and he says it is comfortable. He usually takes that over his SPIII.

love them...upgraded and put in a torque convertor, fluid pump off the cam, radiator to cool it, threw away the 5 speed trans and simplified it to a two speed and floorboards...then I found out they make them like that and called them Converts  I jest...

I think everyone has made them into cafe racers...TOMB had one that went legend, over 200k I think, shipped off to a friend in Canada and resurrected, still running, never apart..

Had an '81, just like the one in the photo. Great bike, super reliable, comfortable, wish I never sold it!

A friend has one... 81, first owner.
It has done about 280 kkm or so... keeps the bike outside, changes the oil every few years, if he remembers to... it just runs and runs and runs.... :)
Cool bike.

rare, some had funky forward pegs instead of floorboards, and some had a tach.

I had an early one ('79 I think), and it was one of the best running Guzzis I've owned.  It had been sort of cafeyed, so was pretty spartan, but very comfortable, fast and steady.  Sold it to a friend and it doesn't get much use these days.

I have one John...  a '79.  A bit of a project.  Bought it on Long Island NY a bit back and it is somewhat of a project.

This is what she looked like when I carted her home...  http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=39582.0

Funny that you mention SP's...  I am changing the hideous, ET head like dash of the much maligned G5 to an SP dash, I have both complete motorcycles.  The G5-SP will sport the Krauser side cases of the G5, upper fairing from an SP which I happen to have as a spare, cast wheels vs wires as I do not like tubes even in the beautiful Borrani rims.

In taking from the SP I will not completely cannibalize the m/c rather just the dash and that part of the harness required and I will have a perfect café donor to boot.

The finished G5-SP will be comfy with that ample seat of the G5, have weather protection and best of all, be a Roundfin with that famous sweet spot.  To enable heated gear and aux lighting I will install the EME Alternator/Rectifier/Regulator upgrade as well.

I will keep an eye out for a decent rider for you...  ;-T

Best,
Rob

P.S.  I happen to have a T-3 Floor Board model Tonti frame For Sale if anyone is in need of one.  Triple trees included.

rare, some had funky forward pegs instead of floorboards, and some had a tach.

Yep, my '80(?) was like that. Had pegs mounted to what would have been the rear set of footboard mounts. Had the tiny little tach that set just back of the big plastic box speedo housing and was driven by a cable snaking up through the steering stem.

One of the nicest, most comfortable Guzzis I've ever had. It came with a Windjammer, KG(?) trunk and some sort of aftermarket "bucket" seat. I bought an 850T just for the Konis and Krausers on it, used those on the G5 as well. Still had a wrecked SP and put those wheels on instead of the spoked ones. Gotta' find of photo of it...

Rob, your G5 find is what got me interested in them in the first place.  I remember when you posted about it.  My intial thought was, "Jesus...I'll bet you could get hepatitus just sitting on that thing."  Then I started reading about them and became intrigued.  There is an older ad for one on the MGNOA classifieds.  The bike is in NY.  I sent an e-mail to the seller two or three days ago but no answer.....

I've only ridden one SP.  Everyone raves about the fairing but it blasted me right in the face.

They are just an SP in different clothes. I have had two SP's and a converted convert all great bikes. The Converted Convert had a windjammer III and a hang 2 king queen saddle, ugly but the most comfortable bike I have had.

More like a Convert with a five-speed since it has that speedo housing, stainless fenders and such. They were all pretty much built from the same platform though.

Found some photos of mine, scanned these from prints so I'm not sure how clear they'll be. Top two are how it ended up in the Spring of '92 just before I sold it and the bottom one was how it looked when I bought it for $800 two years earlier.

I've got one now in my shop. Bought it a few months ago - titled and all. Mostly torn down now.

Everyone keeps telling me they are wonderful - "SUPER COMFY".

I hear the sidestand is VERY nice too. That said - that sidestand is HUGE.

It is a heavy beast.

Contrast to my beloved SP? Knees would not hit the fairing on the G5, unless I installed an SP fairing!

I have a complete sport exhaust, and am thinking about doing the bike as a cafe, then selling all the G5 stuff as the sidestand, bars, et al

Don't know right now. I've had some customers who wanted to buy it then have me put it on the road for them. We'll see.

I had one for a few years. I ended up completely renovating and rebuilding it from a standard bike much like the one in your picture to a red/white tart in the full police configuration.

As you can see from the photos, I completely disassembled it, revised and refreshed everything, and then rebuilt it facing the other direction.

In my mind, the early G5 is the most desirable sleeper of all the early Tonti-framed bikes: 1000cc (or 949 if you insist), iron bores instead of chrome, triple disc setup, switchgear a little better than the predecessor Guzzis, lower foot peg position for taller riders, still has the beautiful Borrani wire wheels. Overall, it's robust, versatile, affordable and pretty much unknown, under valued and under appreciated.

If you find one, snap it up!

A recipe for a bargain Guzzi if one is found for sale. Hmmm, I'll have to keep my eye out because I do want a vintage Goose in the garage eventually. This might just be the best way.  ;-T

I know the Borrani's are beautiful but I actually really like the mag wheels on the later ones.  The Harper's solo seat and a set of floorboards would make for an incredibly comfortable layout for me.  I may have to get serious about looking for one after the first of the year.

I've had one (81) for about 10 years and still love it.  I've put on 70,000 miles in that time. Adjusting valves is about a 15 minute job and all the maintenance is typical easy Guzzi.   Buy it and ride!!  I have a Windjammer fairing and Givi bags on mine and normal fuel economy is about 40 mpg.  I'd ride to Cali and back tomorrow.

The G5 is good as is, but makes a great cafe project startpoint. Lemmie know if you decide to convert something to a G5, I have floorboards, controls and a tank - the usual cafe conversion leftovers.

I've had mine for four years or so, is slowly making its way to a cafe conversion.  It's police bars and floorboards have given way to sport bars and Agostini rearsets.  The Mistral exhaust and pod filters is what really wakes the senses.  It now wears four pot calipers all around (still linked) and an older super comfy Rich Maund seat.  It is my daily commuter, dirt, grime and smiles.

NIce looking bike. What happened?

Was riding with a "friend", who was staggered to my right behind me when his throttle stuck full open and he knocked my bike from under me and sent it sliding down the road on it's right side where it then hit a curb and the flipped over and broke everything on the other side!

If anyone's interested, there's a project G5 on Buffalo CL.  Mostly all there, I believe, not running, smoke's gone from some of the wiring, ugly paint (owner's words), funky kinda super-trapp exhausts.  Mighta been interested at $5-600, owner said he's pretty stuck at $800.

I sold mine to a friend, locally, and he never rides it.  I could ask him if he's wants to sell, if anyone is interested.  It was cosmetically 6 of  10, but mechanically closer to 8 of 10.  Ran really well.

As you have probably gathered from the comments already made, and this applies to the very similar T3 as well as the G5, so few of these are around because so many of them have been used as the relatively cheap basis for a faux LM or SP or just some sort of cafe project. At this point though they are getting rare enough so as to sometimes picking up value/cost, esp if well cared for. For bikes of this age, its not so much what they were when new, but what they have become over the years. So its how well they have been maintained &/or how improved over stock. For example the cast iron bore on a new G5 is better than the chrome bore T3's came with-but many if not most T3's still in operation now are Nigasil or iron bored/sleeved. The T3 I bought new in 1978, now with 165,000 miles or so on it, now runs, shifts, stops, handles, brakes-does everything better now than the day I bought it.

Not to be a shill- but if Mike and Curtis Harper have a G5- that's kind of like one stop shopping. They have all the bits and pieces you could ever want.  I've come to appreciate that sorted, running things (be they motorcycles, boats, cars, etc.) in the end are always less expensive than projects.

I've always thought that the G5 is sort of the best of an era.  John, if you get one you can paint it "dog c*ck red".

Only issue I have with the footpeg G5s is the shift lever is ultra long. It pivots in the back at the same point as a Lemans, but since the peg is much further forward (further even than a T-3) they had to make its unique shift lever a "mile" long. This makes the already long throw guzzi transmission even worse.

I have a 79 G5 with a little over 8K on the speedo, thinking about selling it, I have way to many bikes and don't have time to ride it.

It is a LA Police bike I found in a barn, Charlie did a ton of work on it for me including installing a new wiring harness from Greg Bender.

Anyone interested ping me @ kwnsdn at gmail dot com and I will send you pics.

These are the G5's of Israel, well some of them. All ex police.

That's not a California, it's a G5

The red one was also an ex police G5. Along with the engine and tank "upgrade" it also sports a 2 to 1 exhaust. These two belong to two brothers, one to each.

An old photo, this one is not running now, waiting for a major oil leak to be sorted.

The owner of this one was, sadly, killed in a motorcycle accident in 2006, at the age of 44. He rode a BSA then. The G5 and his other bikes are with his family afaik.

Thanks.
Local police G5's were metallic light blue and white, as in the 3rd photo in my previous post

Have my lascivious eye on a 1990 G5. Very pleased to find this site and the wealth of available information.
Vibration at the grips is a vital consideration for me. Could anyone compare G5 vibration with that of one of
the "new" Triumph Bonnevilles?
Best wishes to all.

Critter, do you have the correct year? I believe G5's were only made up to 1981. Not sure what the 1990 would be. As far as vibrations go, I can't compare, but the G5 seems pretty smooth to me. I use Ride-On in the tires which balances the wheels as you ride, so that may help. Engine vibrations don't seem to be transferring to the grips much, but then again, I'm not sure where your threshold is. I used to ride a jackhammer with wheels growing up, so everything seems smooth to me

You are absolutely correct. It is listed as a 1980. My bad.

UPDATE :
Won't be able to get to this one in time. Had a lot of fun looking at the picture.

Best wishes to all the Guzzi mavens.
One day ...

There's a 100 item list of issue that will cause a motorcycle to vibrate more than is should. Can't compare it to a Bonneville but an old guzzi will always vibrate but you should be able to ride it comfortably for at least an hour. The basics are light as possible gas cables, tighten engine-frame bolts, check steering, wheel and swing arm bearing, ignition timing and balanced carbs. Also balance wheels, flywheel and ring gear. Crank should be balanced from the factory but if you can check it that's good. Pistons and con rods assemblies should be similar in weight, according to the manual.
Nice G5!

My XS650 vibrated my Guzzi's I have owned 650,750 ,850's ,1000' where, are, all are pretty smooth. I have a Convert motor in my Eldorado which is basically the same motor as a G5, SP, and it is very smooth at speed.

It seems like the G5 gets no love.  I've wanted one for a while and I'm curious why so few people seem to have them.

I think for the same reason that a more or less original T3 is hard to find. Both were the standard, plain-Jane bikes of their day. Esp as more time has passed and LMI get rarer and much more expensive, way cheaper  to get a T3 or G5 and make it look like a real LMI or II than to find and buy a real LMI. Also a lot cheaper than other models to use as the basis for a custom cafe racer. And yet both models have the Tonti frame and triple disc brakes that you need/want for these kind of projects. Now so many T3s and G5's have been so used that they are now scarce enough to start picking up value-esp if properly maintained and upgraded. I love my T3 floorboard model that I bought new in 1978. Better bike now in many ways than when I bought it way back then, despite the 175k miles accrued. Kinda nice that more and more now I run in to people, bikers or not, that think this very stock looking example is kind of cool.

An older Tonti frame bike in oem form is becoming harder to find.  I'll keep that in mind when I sell my T3, Convert or Cali's.     and yes I'll ship.  You'll have to pay the freight.

This 'dumb' trick I learned here actually worked today replacing the kickstand spring on my G5.

It's a good trick, but not really necessary to replace the spring on Guzzis with the "police" sidestand. On those, simply remove the stop/locking lug on the top, rotate the leg forward, hook up the spring, rotate it back to normal position and reinstall the stop/locking lug.

The kickstand gives you more leverage to do this vs the penny method.   :thumb:

Not necessary on a police sidstand...

Somebody snagged an original, un-restored but crusty G5 @ the IMOC rally this past Sunday. Saw it on a trailer.

Geesh, Charlie, Tom, steven, you mean I wasted 28 cents?
Now, how do I fix the bike leaning too far over on the G5 sidestand? can the stop/locking lug be repositioned or buffered or does it usually require some welding build-up or replacement? I see MG cycle has an improved locking lug 13432741K for sale.

I don't believe Mandello let one out without what I call like to call the 'micro-fairing'. They're Charming in a funny sort o' way....

The 81's came with the Euro Dash I think is called, which is the smaller one like the T3.

Pic of an factory 81' dash, not mine, but mine is the same. The '81 also is the only one I think that came with the chrome plated turn signals. Mine also had them, but they were old and changed them to the black ones. I posted this photo because is shows all the 81' US model parts, including the correct placement for the Emergency Flasher switch on the '81, which I also removed (saved), but in retrospect not sure why I did that. I could have used it the other day when I got stranded on a sketchy part of the road. Use a blinker instead, but having all flashing would've been safer. I might put that back on and the wiring to go with it.

Speaking of wiring and Dashes, Greg Bender has all the parts and break down of the G5 models in this regards. Got my wiring from him and was worth every penny.

That's the same dash that the V50 Mark II had. MG Cycle had them last time I looked if anyone is interested in fitting one.

EDIT: MGCycle Part Number: 19766900

Hi,

Both local Guzzi owners I know here in Vt have G5, one is the large fairing and bags while the other has much less.  I think both of them will be stripping them down for the cafe look.
