V7 II Spare Cables
« on: March 27, 2017, 07:23:59 PM »
I've been slowly preparing to do a bit of a tour around wherever on the V7-II later in the year.
I'm obviously going to pack a spare clutch cable, but should I also get spare throttle cables?
In all my time riding I can't remember ever needing to replace them on any bike...and they're quite pricey for the V7 (AU$100 from TLM).

Cheers

I have never carried spare cables, just inspect and replace if looking tattered

I threw one of these in under the seat https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009YEYN6A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

for less that $10 I figured why not. It stores nicely in the small round tin.
I'd much rather ask for forgiveness than ask for permission.

I'd be really surprised if you need 'em Craig. The days of Guzzis snapping their cables on a regular basis are thankfully long gone.

I had a clutch cable snap on my '13 Stone after only ~8000 mi.  The bead at the hand lever end had been improperly fastened and the cable broke due to injured cable wires.  Fortunately, it snapped just as I pulled into my driveway after a ~100-mi ride.  It was replaced on warranty, but I never quite trusted the cable after that and always kept a spare.  My current V7II Stone has a different clutch cable that is routed more cleanly, and doesn't bend sharply anywhere.  Overall, it looks more robust and I haven't thought about keeping a spare.  If I hear of any that have broken, I'll be more concerned.

It's a good idea to occasionally check that the bead at the hand lever end is properly lubricated.  Otherwise, the cable could bend at the bead every time you use the lever, and eventually break.

Throttle cables don't get as much stress or wear as clutch cables, but they are thinner.  Nonetheless, they seem to last a long time.

I DO carry spare cables on trips - clutch, throttle & choke (for the V7C), but I have only once had to replace a broken cable on the road in 240,000 V7 Kim's - the clutch cable on the V7C broke - frayed at the second bend from the top at 107,000 km. NRMA premium care to the rescue -a tilt tray from Castle Hill home - all of 35km - where the spare was sitting.

I have replaced the throttle cables, but that was during the reassembly in the workshop. There was a. Broken strand at the throttle body end.

My advice, for what it's worth, is to take a spare clutch cable. If you need it in the middle of nowhere, you will bless your foresight. It doesn't take up much room. If that's too awkward, a cable repair kit (Venhill make a decent one) would be worthwhile. I wouldn't bother with throttle cables - firstly as they unlikely to fail & secondly as it's unlikely both would go at once.

Enjoy the ride.
