« on: May 05, 2018, 12:49:09 AM »
No, not John Wayne, Al Pacino, Donny Trump, et al..
Some nice moments early on the Oz lap.

Start of first full day

Looks like Beetle and the big Griso could be coming this way at some point..

Cruel Pete. Beetle's Griso would only need half of one of those.

Rubbish. I'd use one whole one and piss the other up the wall, 'cos I can.

Well, we made it eventually to Alice Springs.
There's me, Paul Brooking, Ian (Bat 11) and Ian's mate Terry.
We met up at Port Augusta and travelled North towards Alice springs with a plan that Ian and Terry would carry on to Darwin, Paul would travel back to Adelaide via the Tanami Track and I will go around through Perth and back via the Nullarbor Plain to Melbourne.
The set up is that Ian and Terry leave a bit before us two 'cos they travel a bit slower and we catch up as the day wears on.
A bit of an issue occurred where Paul's pack rattled down and his hip flask of whiskey ignited on the hot exhaust and set fire to the rear of the Stelvio.
Here's some shots of fun.

I can confirm the loss of a 10 yo single malt in the explosion from the leaky hip flask. Deeply embarrassed for all malt drinkers. I bought a bottle especially for the trip. Lucky it wasn’t cask strength but there is no reason to gift strawberries to pigs [emoji79][emoji3][emoji3][emoji3]

Good on ya, mate. So, are you going the shorter way over the Gunbarrel, or are you heading north first & turning left at Katherine?

Whatever. It's great out there. Enjoy.

Are you the bloke who gets on ABC radio on overnights Malik..?

Anyway, all's going well. Ian (Bat 11) and his mate Terry have now headed North to Darwin and tomorrow I'm turning west for Perth, then East again for Melbourne.
Will be 10,000 k by the finish with 3,000 done so far.
The Pilot 5's have 8,000 on them an drew don't look marked yet, but give them time.

If you guys go thru Darwin there's a museum there with a B-25 from the 528th Bomb Group.  Story is the plane was found abandoned and covered with sand.  Nobody knew how it got there.

Turns out it's the very plane my father flew on a booze run from Darwin to the south coast.  They got a bit loopy, got lost on the return (!), ran out of fuel, and ditched the plane.  The Australian Government invited all the surviving 528th flyers back around 25 years ago and asked about the plane.  That's when they 'fessed up!

Me? On radio? Overnight? Not a chance. Some of us old farts like to arise before dawn to check the sun is rising, so we need our (beauty) sleep. Besides, work interferes with riding.

Drop into Coral Bay on your way down. Take Burkett rd of North Coastal rd to the Exmouth Manilya rd turn left to Coral Bay. Burkett rd looks like it is now bitumen. No fuel along there though. Burkett about 100kms long.

Oh, and jus the when you think you're doing ok..
You meet a couple of kids on a GS who wanted to go for a ride.
London across Europe and (somehow) via Afghanistan, Pakistan, blah blah to Jakarta (I think!).
Then a short boat ride to Darwin and down to Melbourne..!
Bloody hell...

It's the relationship with distance and time that's got me thinking..
It's well documented in some circles that we perceive the rate of the passage of time as a function of the amount that's already passed.
At the end of six years primary school you feel like an eternity has passed yet six years ago I was planning my first Europe trip, seems like yesterday.
Half an hour with Madame Lash at your local bondage dungeon seems to just fly past, yet 30 minutes watching a dying stand up comic from the front row while he's  committing professional suicide seems to just drag.
Can you feel me..?
It's kind of occurred to me that distance is the same deal.
I used to reckon 500 k's was a decent ride, yet recently it seems like a tank of juice and then a quick jaunt and it's over.
Ummm yeah (that sounds familiar)..
There seems to be strategies that creep into one's thinking that allow you to deal with the trip in 1000 km blocks..
Dunno...

It's a bit of a saga, but mine owe me AUD 1200 give or take.

Well..
There I was cruising along at 115 or so k's, when I came up upon a very large transport truck with a Pilot vehicle in front and one behind, as is the usual arrangement.
The road ahead had a series of undulations, such that it was not possible to tell if it was advisable to pass. Now Papa Teddy Bear ahead in the truck could clearly see ahead a goodly distance and took it upon himself to radio the pilot between he and myself with the good news that it would now be ok for me to pass.
Armed with this wonderful news, the pilot waved his arm in a commanding manner suggesting that I should pass now without delay.
Now call me old fashioned, but I'd sort of formed the opinion that such command decisions regarding my bike and I, were mine and mine alone, so I opted to remain ensconced in my little cubby hole until I decided to conduct the passing move.
Clearly the little guy in the pilot vehicle had his already over developed sense of importance damaged by the fact that I'd ignored his command and gesticulated wildly out the window in an attempt to get me to obey.
When I was good and ready, I ascertained that the move could be made and eased past Pee Wee Herman in the pilot vehicle and Papa Teddy Bear in the 130 odd tonne combination.
Upon drawing level with Pee Wee I was treated to more gesturing with the intention of telling me that I should have obeyed his "command". There wasn't enough opportunity to fully convey my response, but I sorta' got the point across that he really should make every attempt to "go forth and multiply" or at the very least at his earliest convenience, go and get a brown dog up him, because as mentioned these decisions are mine and even if Jesus H Christ himself descended from heaven and told me all was safe, it'd be ...
"Thanks J.C. But I'll take it from here...!
What say y'all..?

That would be interesting.  Didn't you do a write-up on them previously or was that on Guzzi Tech?
