(NEWSER) – They weighed no more than 40 pounds each and reached just up to one's knees, but all together, a pack of seven dachshunds proved a deadly force in Oklahoma. Carter County Sheriff Chris Bryant says 52-year-old Tracy Garcia was mauled and killed Thursday night by her neighbor's dogs near her home outside Ardmore, KXII reports. When first responders arrived on the scene, at least one of the dachshunds turned on them, too, even charging toward the rescuers. "Unfortunately … we had to shoot one dog," Bryant says, per KFOR, adding they opened fire on it "to protect our deputies, as well as the medical personnel." After the attack, the owner requested the other six dogs be put down, too. The AP reports it's not clear what led to the attack.

At the animal shelter where the dogs were sent after being euthanized, technician Amanda Dinwiddie said four of the dogs were males, three were females, and they all ranged in age from about a year to 3 years old; the older dog may have been the other dogs' mother, the shelter's co-director tells the Daily Ardmoreite. Six of the dogs were said to be a dachshund-terrier mix, while the older one was thought to be a dachshund-border collie mix. Dinwiddie adds the dogs were infested with fleas and ticks—"you can tell they have been living out in the woods"—but otherwise healthy. "This is just a bad deal all the way around," Bryant says, per KTEN. Whether the dogs' owner faces charges will be determined after the district attorney's office reviews Garcia's autopsy results.  No , only what the local Ardmore news is saying . So far only conjecture and rumor . 2nd horrible dog attack in Oklahoma over the last few days , the other involved 4 pit bull terriers . These things happen occasionally , usually the result of dogs who have been allowed to return to a feral state .

  Doubtful , there were only 2 confirmed rabies cases in dogs all of last year in Oklahoma . There were more cases in cattle , still only 5 verified . Vaccination rates for canines is pretty universal , and we don't have all that many skunks . Likely these dogs had just been mistreated and not fed for several days , reports say they were in very poor shape and covered in fleas .

 They were mixed breed , and a standard Daschund can weigh 30 plus LBS , you guys are just used to seeing miniature or toy versions .

 Dachshunds wer originally bred as hunting dogs to go down into a badgers hole and drag him out.
 Those of you who have had experience with badgers know what kind of courage and aggressiveness
 that takes.  They are cute but they were bred to fight a formidable foe.  They are generally not afraid of anything or anyone.  Gone feral they would be very dangerous.

The old lady across the street has 3-4 of the things at any one time ( the little ones that would fit on a bun). She's fallen a couple of times and I've had to go over and help her up.
This story gives me bad thoughts about what could happen if she doesn't have her phone nearby. A pack of foot long piranhas.
