Old BMW parts
« on: May 19, 2018, 10:24:01 PM »
I have added a 1984 R100RS to my fleet.  Does anyone have a favorite source of parts for old airhead BMWs?  Internet searches on something like this are a bit overwhelming.

Bob's BMW or Bentonville BMW for new parts , Blue Moon Cycles also . Beemer Heaven for used parts.

84 RS - Last Edition? Love that pearlescent white paint.

I used to get all my airhead parts from BMW of Chicago because they always dropped a bag of M&Ms into the box - but alas they are out of business. Now use Max BMW - easy to search parts on line, prompt shipping. Seems everyones prices for new OEM are comparable.

It is indeed a Last Edition R100RS.  Given that I am turning 65 next year, I suspect it is also the last bike I will buy.  A cool bike, but a bittersweet purchase.

You may be surprised at the number of parts still currently available from BMW off their parts fiche.

I have a '52 R68 and I can still order parts for it from BMW!

....exactly why I use BMW dealers online - many have easily searchable parts fiche online.

I don't get the 'given' part....  Not that I know anything about your personal situation but for many people, it seems to me late 70s is where they might start thinking that this will be last bike.  I'm not yet in my 60s, but I'm looking forward to doing a lot of riding over that entire decade!

About the only thing that I cannot find is an OEM gas cap for my 1991 R100GS.  I stupidly left it on the rear rack after fueling, closed the tank bag, and discovered my mistake 30 miles down the road.  A search of the roadside near the gas station didn't result in finding it.

These things are unobtanium.  I ordered a replacement from RePsysicle in Ohio, and found it must be for every version other than those made for the USA.  It didn't fit mine.

If anyone out there has a screw-in cap from a 'modern' airhead, let me know if you want to sell.

Yeah , old beemer parts are readily available . I will recommend the upgraded alternator rotor and stator from Blue Moon in Georgia , and buying actual BMW parts when possible .

The Last Edition 1,000's with 40 MM carbs and exhaust are great motors .

Don't overlook this site, the Internet BMW Riders Marketplace.
There are lots of hard to find bikes and parts here, and I've had great luck dealing with the sellers.

WHAT? I HATE HEARING THAT S***. I'M 84 AND BOUGHT A NEW v7 LAST FALL.
I trust your health is good? A lighter bike is never a bad idea, but don't even think about hanging it up.
My neck bones told me a week ago I have to give up a race bike and a few sport bikes.
Have you joined 'bmw airheads'?  Good place to get help for the obvious.   R3~

Hi, Charlie,

This is a good resource.  Note my gas cap dilemma.  The cap and associated parts are shown but not described.  It is not available from BMW as NOS, either.

I don’t plan to hang up the riding any time soon.  I am taking the Ducati to a track day next weekend.

As I get older, though, I feel a greater desire to simplify my life.  I once thought that a man couldn’t have too many guitars or motorcycles.  I am not so sure any more.

Damn! You're right - it's NLA! I did the same thing (well, similar) and lost the gas cap for the 100GS PD. At least that one was (and still is) available, but only in the locking version. I looked and looked but never found it.

I've heard of an automotive fuel cap that will screw into the tank and will work. I'll have to see if I can find the data again for you. It was one of the guys on the Airheads section of Adventure Rider. I suggest you got one of those (cheap - ten or twenty bucks) and watch on ebay and ibmwr market place. They show up.

Here are two more guys to check - lamontsanfurd on ebay.    Roland Robataiile - http://www.fototime.com/ftweb/bin/ft.dll/pictures?ma=t&userid=BB2270E91CC04A6D8A724CB4D3A647E1&albumid=F2D705C1706148C4840FCB1F64350EBB&st=he&GUID={2AFFF450-838A-47CD-93A9-0EE2D11A21A8}&sent=stored

I found this at Advanced Auto.  Less than $15.00.  It works, and since I have a tank bag on the bike, it is out of sight under the bag.

Still like to find a good used one.  There's some real junkers on eBay with asking prices of $75.00 - $100.00.
