battery type?
« on: May 20, 2018, 01:11:46 PM »
Hey Guys, I'm bringing an old Guzzi 125 "tuttoterreno" (2 stroke dirt bike) back to life. It calls for a 6v 8ah battery. Any problem w/using a "sealed lead-acid" battery? Or should I stick to the old dry-charged that I'd have to add acid to after I get it? It has a very simple charging system utilizing a "magneto" & a "rectifier" (terms from the wiring diagram).
Thanks,
ronkom

Volts is Volts, shouldn't matter.  Size matters, find something that fits into the intended space.

Consider an AGM type battery that gives much more flexibility in mounting position.....tilted, sideways, etc. I’m only presuming they’re available in 6V.

Thanks for the replies.
Battery tray & hold down on the bike frame has room for 4.75" wide x 2.25" deep x 4.75" tall.
Battery mart has a "sealed lead-acid" 3.82"wide X 2.21" deep x 4.61" tall. 8.5 AH $13.95....Almost perfect!

Here is a list of a handful of 6 volt batteries with sizes, may lead you to something.  I had to measure one out for the last battery in I bought for an old Triumph.  Found the measurements here, then cross referenced the YUSA battery with others to find more options.

Never mind, just looked at your measurements, nothing close here.

If the system does not have a regulator, I would use a cheap old wet cell, with a vent hose, and keep the water topped off.

An AGM battery has very little water to spare. Normally they recombine the gases back into water. But it you overcharge it much, the safety vents will pop and dry it out really quick.
