How anybody can live with cheap crap shocks is beyond me.

Ok, let me try a different simile.

It's possible to know what foie gras is but still prefer fried chicken.

Or a hamburger over Beef Wellington, or a box wine over a $100/bottle reserve.

If the "Like" button was still around I'd have hit it for kevm and Pete just now.

They either don't know any better because they have never tried quality suspension, are too cheap to invest in quality suspension, or really don't ride their bikes enough for it to really matter.

I do find it amazing that folks will spend $1000 making a bike louder but can't imagine spending money to make the bike ride better.

Some (most I'm sure) would consider the original shocks on a '76 Convert to be "crap". However, my Convert has possibly the best rear suspension of any Guzzi I've owned. How is that possible? No doubt it is helped considerably by the Convert "couch" seat with it's nearly 5" thick foam.  That must mask a huge amount of "crap" or else they aren't all that bad in the first place.

Now the front forks... getting better now that the new fork tubes and original lowers have "got to know each other" over the last 11k miles, but there's still a lot of room for improvement.

I replaced the original shocks on my first SP, probably the same units (Cerriani?) as the ones on Charlie's 'Vert with Marzocchi Stradas. What a dud move that was, they were awful! The originals were OK but the springs were too weak for both Jude and I riding together, still better than the 'Zocchis mind!

I will say that in the flatlands of illinois with expressway expansion joints, and frost heaves. The take-off Harley Big Twin air shocks worked great. Hagons on now just because.

I mounted the shocks from Curtis and am pleased. They are just fine, thanks Curtis. I also had new Shinko tour master 231's and tubed put on. My 2003 Stone is good for awhile now.

Why would you put something on your bike that people are getting rid of because they believe it to be junk?

Because a great many new Harley owners want to slam their bikes as low as they can go, and HD dealers often have a lot of new or barely used new shocks, cheap. Same thing with exhausts, Sportster mufflers in particular are out there in large numbers, and cheap.

Not sure what Harley forums you are on, but on the Road Glide forum I am on people are dumping the stock suspension for something that provides a better ride which usually means more shock stroke and adjustability over just preload.

I have test ridden every Harley made and most have very limited suspension travel from the factory so I am not buying your post in regard to shocks.  Now exhausts?  Yes, a lot of people on every brand of motorcycle change out their exhaust for some crazy reason.

Maybe the RG is an anomaly, but yes for the last decade or two a LOT of people got rid of the stock shocks on FLH's to slam them - so many that the factory started doing it.

Then again most Harley riders shun the RG for the better WORKING fairing too, so maybe RG owners are more likely to seek a better ride.

Lastly I hear that this all changed in 2017 as they dumped the air suspension on the FLHs in favor of good old fashioned mechanical preload adjustment shocks.

The preload is only on one shock.  The other is basically a spring on a piston.  Crap.  I switched to Ohlins with longer stroke within 60 miles
