EV rear wheel removal school me please
« on: January 17, 2018, 09:36:21 AM »
I want to save a little money on labor charges and also don't want to ride in this nasty cold wet weather, so i thought I'd remove the rear wheel from my EV (98) and take it to the shop for a new tire for this summer's riding. (Can you say southern France?)

But looking at it it looks like I need to remove the left muffler, bummer. Anything else??

Thanks!!

I also remove the brake caliper and hang it aside. I also pull the front wheel and lower the forks it to the ground while on the centerstand which will put the back end up high enough to get the back wheel out from the fender.

+1 on the front wheel removal-BUT- make sure you secure the centerstand so that it does not retract when you're fiddling with the rear tire!  Don't ask me how I know.

Left muffler off.
Caliper off.
Brake caliper plate pin out, it there is one.
Rear wheel well in the air to clear the fender. (I have put the bike on the side in grass before for roadside repairs)
Loosen right nut.
Loosen pinch bolt if you have it.
Remove axle.

When installing. Make sure the brake caliper plate is pinned correctly.
Do grease the splines and inspect the bearings.

If you leave front wheel on, raise rear by putting 2x4 under centerstand. It is enough to wheel out.

Do what the previous posts say and nobody gets hurt. The only thing I'll add is that I've used a 2x6 under the center stand for some extra height but PLEASE make sure you secure the stand as Dharma says (think snug tie-down from bottom of stand to front wheel or forks)

Yes, the 98 has a brake anchor pin through the left swingarm tube.  It must be removed to pull the tire.  Also, deflate the tire fully.  The brake anchor pin is held in by blue LocTite.  Make sure to add fresh when you re-install the pin.

If you pull the drive box to lubricate the splines, don't lock it down when  you reinstall.  Put the axle through first and then lock down the rear drive.  If you don't get it 'square' you'll never get the axle back in.

Great question. I did not know a 2x4 would get the rear high enough to get the wheel out. Sure beats putting the bike on the center stand and leaning the bike over on yourself as your wife or 15 year old son fights get the wheel out. My world just got easier and safer.

I find easier to use two 1" boards on each side. Tilt a bit sliding one one inch board under the stand leg. Do same on other side, repeat with second boards. This way you never have to tilt the bike as much which is helpful when doing this by oneself.

On the Special Sport, I do it by backing the bike up so that when the center stand is down, the rear wheel is hanging over a curb with the center stand feet right at the edge of it.  Remove the 2 lower shock mount bolts and the axle will come out without dropping the muffler.

I use a couple short 2x4s about 10" long bike on center stand, deploy side stand lean bike onto side stand side 1 board under rh of center stand, place second 2x4 next to center stand lift/push bike onto rh side of center stand use foot to side 2x4 under lh side of center stand and this gives you the clearance you need. The 2x4s are placed long way with the bike, it works on my Cal. Spcl but I'm using a center stand off a T3 so your bike may act different.

Good advise.  I never thought of this.  You are referring to taking the gearbox off the swingarm, right.  Leaving the 4 acorn nuts loose while installing the axle?

C-stand and side stand out w/2x4's or 2x6's.   :1:  Easier to move blocks of wood around than the C Lift, motorcycle lift or the engine hoist.

After placing boards under center stand I engage the front brake with a stout rubber band.

Standard procedure on all dual swing arm Guzzis. Just tighten the acorn nuts finger tight, install and torque axle, tighten acorn nuts last.

Don't forget to re-grease the splines on the trans output shaft and u-joint.  Clean the road mung off the underside of the bike.  Perfect time while the bike is laid up and you can't ride it because of Winter.  Check and re-torque fasteners.   :thumb:

Before you re-install the muffler you want to open up the front where the clamp is so it will slide over the header pipe easily.  Otherwise you will need to wrestle with aliding it on far enough.  Forcing it puts stress on the header nuts and studs and that's bad.
