A friend of mine had one of these and it was a really nice bike. When he got it it had reworked ohlins suspension and lots of other work then he put more money into it as he always does. Rode it for a while and traded it on something different.

If I had 3 less bikes and one of these came along in the 5K range I'd be tempted. Actually this is the only HD ever produced  that even remotely peeks my interest.

the 1200X too tall for me I need an XT and would only want the 2009/10, the last years nailed everything....they don't show up very often.. instead I watch for an XB9SST.

Got it. I found this, although the fine print says it's a rebuilt title. It's close to you right?

I couldn't find a model called the XB9SST anywhere. I see the XB9S and the XB9SX

I've never been tempted by a Harley, but I have given serious thought to one of these.  Really like the looks, and there is one for sale not far from me.

However, what stops me from buying it is the weight and the small gas tank.

I hate very heavy bikes, myself, but riding the XR 1200, you dont feel the weight that much. The XR feels like I am riding a very powerful dirt bike. Its a bit tall, and narrow feeling, but that bike is all about the motor. The torque it produces has caught me by surprise a couple of times, breaking the rear tire loose, as I am accelerating at around 3K rpms. Its certainly a hairy chested beast, not made for a beginner.

Actually I believe it's got the same final drive ratio as the 883 specifically for grunt around town and twisties. So yes, you could probably change the primary chain sprocket and/or final sprocket for taller gearing if desired. I'm sure the XRownersf forum has someone who has done it or thought about it by now.

My 97 Buell stock was a bout 3000 rpm at 60... I changed the front pulley to one less tooth so 60 was around 3300 rpm..The bike felt better and I never rode over 100 mph..

I rode one a while ago, maybe 2013 IIRC. At the time it was 2 years old and they still wanted 10k for it. That was just $1,500 less than new! Overall I wasn't too impressed with it. The rear brake resevoir was dug into my right ankle, the wind protection was actually far worse than my DR650 and I discovered that it had a plastic fuel tank. Then there was the H-D style seperate (L and R) blinker switches.

I had a chaperone on the ride and wasn't able to but the spurs to it like I wanted but it never felt quick. The windblast was memorable for being as bad as it was. Made my DR650 feel like a Goldwing in comparison.

I would have paid $7.5k - $8k for it but the dealer wasn't coming down a nickle until I told them I was serious. I explained that there was no way I'd be serious about the bike until they did something about the price. He told me he couldn't come down until I told him I was serious. This BS went on for two hours. I then got up and went to the next H-D dealership.

They had an identical bike with the same miles for $8,000. Both dealers were owned by the same guy so my salesman certainly was aware of that bike. That was when I decided they couldn't give me the bike.

It's an odd bike. Is it a sportbike? No. Is it a cafe racer? No. Is it a dirt tracker like the bike it's named after? No. Is it a Sportster? That depends on who you ask.

I deffinitely think these bikes are at the "bottom" on value right now. 10-15 years from now, I predict folks that have lusted for one ,will kick themselves in the butt, for not picking one up for $5K now.
The bike is just so unique, especially in the Orange Pearl color, and is such a hoot to ride...Its the ultimate, cool "Hooligan Bike" IMHO.

Its funny you say that. Every time I sell a bike I always sweep out the garage and tidy things up. It takes about 8 minutes as the garage is usually pretty tidy. More than once I gotten the comment "I knew when I saw your garage I had no worries about the bike"

Last years bugs wouldn't bother me as much as crap laying around.

I always wondered why they didn't make a couple of models of the platform, the Street Tracker and a new Cafe Racer?

It's a shame the motor doesn't rev higher.  My guess is that the Buell stuff wouldn't work because the Sportster is so heavy that it needs lower end power band torque and the Buell would be too weak.

OTOH, I wonder why Buell didn't build at least one traditionally styled bike that would've taken the legacy of the old cafe racer?

I've always loved the look of the XLCR.  Way ahead of its time, at least for Harley.  Of course, it's an iron head Sporty, not known as the best example of the breed.  Solid mount, paint shaker vibs.  But it's only for those short nice Sunday rides anyway.  Clean ones are going for around $10,000 now, and don't show up very often.

Good to pass on it.  No one has mentioned it but he did list that there is a lien on the title.  He would have been limited on his price because of that.  Pay off the note and how much he wants on top of that.

I've gotten old and wise enough not to get into a situation where a guy still has a lien on a title on a 10-year-old bike that he can't pay off.   That's a world I learned not to live in.   You buy and ride what you can afford ....

The Buell gets a lot of it's HP advantage from the huge intake, thats not a tank on the XB's, but the cover houses the intake, fuel is in the frame, and the large car style muffler with a  interactive exhaust actuator. The sportster does lend itself for this design and meet all the regulations.

At a recent family gathering, one of my cousins rode in on his XR1200X. As I stood there admiring it, several other of my cousins were commenting to him that it "wasn't loud enough", "looks really uncomfortable, needs forward controls", and "you need to add some chrome."

I bought my WR250X from a guy that had a lean on it and needed to sell it to qualify for a new house he was buying. We went to his bank, I handed them the cash (and a few leftover dollars to him), they gave me a lean release, notarized the title and we were both on our way. Easy as could be in less than half an hour.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

As long as the lien holder is local to you and the buyer it's great. But all too often too often that not the case.

Not saying that it can't be easy if you're both local and the guy is straight up.

But often, when people are borrowing money on older bikes they can't afford, the loan is underwater, the bike hasn't been cared for, you're dealing with a "title loan" place etc.

Just sayin' my preference ... it might work for others.

:1: with what Lannis said.  If the lienholder is local then it may work out.  Better to deal with a local bank/financial institution, if you're financing.  If you're buying better not to finance it.  One consideration in the total cost is the full coverage insurance that will be required for the vehicle.  Added costs that most people don't figure into the the total finance package.    :violent1:

I had an XB9 City and loved it for the most part. Sold after Buell dropped but not forgotten. Went to my first rally on it 2009 and was about the oldest guy there but still had a good time. Still search Buell on Craigs....
