California 1400 battery
« on: April 24, 2018, 10:21:50 AM »
My battery needs to be replaced.  Does everyone suggest the OEM Yuasa or can I get away with an off brand replacement?  The Yuasa seems to run between 100 and 120 bucks while replacements are 60-80.

When I swap the battery am I going to be prompted to enter the 5 digit security code?  I have no idea what it is since I bought the bike used.  Can anyone provide the factory set code in case(hopefully) the previous owner didn't change it?

Thanks guys.

Not sure about the code, but I have had my battery disconnected and I didn't need to do anything special.

I've gone with the OEM replacement only because an AGM  battery isn't available.  An off brand might not last as long.

As for the battery itself, since it does not stand upright it does need to be a sealed battery, whatever you would get.

The battery does sit upright, you may be getting confused with a Stelvio or Griso.

In theory, any battery with the cranking power and the right dimensions will work, but Yuasa seem to sit on top of the pile.  Pay your money, and take your choice.

You will not have to remarry the keys to the dashboard after disconnecting the battery, so no worries there.  However, you will have to reset the clock and dashboard preferences.

Odyssey is the off brand I'd choose, if not going back with Yuasa

My Yuasa lasted 4 years. Replaced it with a MotoBatt (also AGM). Although it is the same physical size the terminals are slightly differently aligned. Took a lot of pushing and pulling to get the cables to bolt in. There is very little space available in the battery tray and the cover that fits above it. Will go back to Yuasa next time.

Thanks, you're correct. It's been a while since I was in there and I have my Stelvio on the brain, so my bad.

Factory dash code should be 00000,you won't have to re enter it either way. You may however need to re calibrate the traction control. You will know if the orange triangle icon stays on on bottom of dash. Here is how to re calibrate tc .
At idle Just scroll mode toggle on left bar to Menu then push , now  toggle down to calibration. Calibrate will remain at the bottom of dash, You need to drive in a  straight line in second gear at exactly 19 miles per hour until the calibrate on dash disappears. Pull over and shut off ignition for 30 seconds. Done, when you restart orange triangle should be gone. I think the triangle may stay on if you choose to shut TC off, I will have to check on that. I always leave mine at setting 1.

Just checked the TC indicator, ( orange triangle ),  it does stay lit continuously if TC is intentionally shut off.  I had to re calibrate mine after winter storage, I assume because I had removed the battery.

AF1 has the replacement.  It's 120 bucks and $20 for shipping.  Suggestions for where to buy?

Replaced my battery last night.  Still have the battery icon on my dash.  Is that normal and I have to manually reset it using the maintenance code or do I have a charging or ground problem?

You're saying you have a battery icon on your LCD separate from the scrollable voltage monitor at the bottom?
What voltage is it showing?

I replaced my battery this weekend and didn't experience anything strange like that.

Yes.  However, the icon disappeared when I went out to gaze longingly at the bike in the parking lot at work a few minutes ago.  I fired it up...just to listen to it for a minute...and the icon wasn't on the dash.  The battery icon was on the dash this morning when I rode in.  Hopefully it doesn't come back on and all is well.

I'd double check the battery connections.  May have come loose.
