Odd Norge quirk?
« on: July 18, 2018, 10:32:21 AM »
Not sure if this has been seen by others. My work travel continues non the Norge. Now in Cleveland. Almost 3 months on two wheels.
A couple nights ago I was in Meadville, PA and it rained rather heavy during the night. Of course, the crappy Guzzi bags on the Norge filled with water as expected but when I started the bike up, the emergency flashers came on. I pushed the button and they go off. A few minutes later, they are on again. I push the button and back off. This repeated over and over as I rode to Cleveland and then slowed down as the bike got dryer. Then now fully dry, they haven't done this. Now the emergency button doesn't feel like a typical switch. I think it just sends a signal to the ECU and it triggers the relay. I just expected the Norge to be a little more water resistant!

My Norge is fairly water-resistant, but it is definitely not water-proof. My bags leak, even with new rubber seals. They did so on my previous Norge as well. I have not yet had electrical problems, but it may just be a matter of time! (I do not think electrical problems caused by too much water are limited to the Norge, or even Moto Guzzi.)

Electric glitch JB. Might pull dash plug and coat pins. Look in errors to see if anything else triggered.

Cleveland Moto can assist, I'm sure.
I'm 3 hours away in Buffalo if you're up this way.

No help here.  I have very recently been in some astounding heavy rains, but no issues with anything.

Indicator logic is in the dash so I'd expect the hazard logic to be the same but given punching the button fixes it temporarily I'd be looking at the button and it's waterproofing before I started looking for expensive dash failures.

Roy will probably be able to say for sure, (I'm in a motel in Maine. I can't be arsed finding a wiring schematic and he's much better than me at this stuff!) but I'd guess it's a three wire instantaneous switch similar to the ones for the heated grips which can be one of those things that either works or it doesn't! Bet there's a better aftermarket option.

From what I can make out in the manual the Hazard input to the dash is pin 14
From the description the water is pulling the input to ground (chassis) turning the input on, I don't believe it's serious, you have probably seen other old Guzzis where the oil light turns on in the wet.
It could be the connector at the dash but I think it's more likely to be in the switch or associated connector, I suggest you give the connector and switch internals a shot of WD40, it can't do any harm.

Three months on the road eh, living the dream.

Update
http://www.thisoldtractor.com/guzzi007/schematics/2007_Norge.gif
I thought the switch would be part of one of the main bar switches but its item (7)
Closing the switch switch pulls pin 14 down, pin 18 the red wire is system ground.
I think the LED stays On.

Same here.

In a driving rain for an extended period of time my Norge will show a blown turn signal bulb. And when all dried out the problem goes away, never to be seen until the next driving rate.

Gawd what shabby quality.  "Bags filled with water, as expected."  Bags are $1214.46 EACH and a 3-MONTH wait.  That's $2500 for non-functional, plastic crap.  Starter side pod is $173.30 and two months lead time on the special order.  Water damaged dashboard is $595.96, and two months away.   How completely embarrassing.

Probably the switch filled with water too.  I'd look for the problem there first because it's the cheapest.  You have to replace the entire pod of crap instead of just the current crappiest internal bit, because that sucks the most.

.  You need to be more careful.  Motor vehicles are not intended to be exposed to moisture.  Don't you know they leak?

And you wonder how come the bikes are no longer made and have no resale value.   :boxing:

It was a long all night soaking rain so I'm not worried about it.
Hasn't happened in lighter rains.
The bags just don't seal all that well. I ordered HB brackets and when they arrive and if I get home, I will switch to them.
I will most likely shoot up the stock Norge bags with my 22................. ..

John, When I had my Norge the top box gasket fell out in pieces. I was at Mills Fleet Farm on day and saw some gas line for small 2 cycle engines and a light bulb went on. it's the clear stuff they use on weed whips and such. It fits right in the grove and stays there, no glue was needed.
Hope this helps.

Ride safe
Earl

Or buy a nice set of waterproof bag liners...for a few hundred bucks and youre good to go.

Ive posted links in the past to the guy in Italy i had bought mine from and they work great.  Have had them for 5 years now and ridden thru lots of downpours...no issues.

If interested, Ill post again.

Well, the stock Norge bags also don't pack easily. The odd shape in there. Hard to fit a 14" laptop in them.
I have the larger and smaller HB bags and the large ones will hold more than the stock Norge bags.

Ok so they don't work very well..
But jeez they look cool.

Isn't that all that really matters..?
BTW..
I added that extra latch to the front edge. It helped the waterproof issue a lot, but still less than acceptable.

Hope you don't see it again. I was in some extrodinarly long and heavy rains in Iowa last week, but had no issues.  And of course, my HBs were water tight.
