biker jailed for riding at 189mph
« on: July 20, 2018, 09:55:36 AM »
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-nottinghamshire-44898534/biker-jailed-after-filming-himself-riding-at-189mph

very weird.... Having personally never used social media or felt any need to document the various things I do to 'share' with the internet, which I understand sets me apart from most of the western world, I'm struggling to understand this...

Obviously this guy is riding fast and pulling wheelies because he enjoys doing it and doesn't care too much about the safety of others or following the law...

That bit I understand, even if I don't agree with it

but seeing as its a criminal activity, why would he film and store hours worth of evidence against himself?

Or is the very point of pulling those wheelies etc TO share them by filming them?

Can anyone relate?

Someone educate me!??

BTW I'm an upper limit millennial. So it's not a generational thing....

It's just like a villain in a Bond movie spilling his guts to Bond about his entire operation, and showing him where the "self-destruct" switch is, when he thinks he has Bond tied up and helpless.

"Hubris", the old Greeks used to call it.   I'm SUPERMAN and INVINCIBLE and I'm going to wave it in your face!

It's why "Pride" comes first on the list of deadly sins ...

well that makes sense.... hubris is wanting to have the powers of the gods... in this day and age being stronger than you are....

and any action that says 'look at me' is essentially getting your sense of self worth from other people looking at you.... So yeah, the more fragile the ego, the more people they'll want to see their actions???

I'll buy that theory

What is an "upper limit millenial" ?

We had a bad guy go on a car theft and killing spree that started in a very small town in central OK a year or so back , he recorded most of it and posted it on social media , it really seems these types are intending to get caught . Us real outlaws keep a low profile

I'm not sure how aware the average individual is that many law enforcement agencies are quite internet-savvy and are on the lookout for social-media daredevils and braggarts... :copcar:

You ever know that guy, back in high school/ college... that had have all eyes on him? Got naked at parties. Jumped off balconies. Acted out in class. Always had to have something to say for everything?

Same shit.

it's a brave new world, where "likes" and "followers" mean $$$$$$, and if the western world has one lesson to teach, it's "whatever it takes to get yours". That's what this is. Exploitation of social media to gain fame & followers.

Old enough to say I've done it, young enough to do it again.

I don't have a face book account, never wanted one or any of the other 'social media' sites, Wild Guzzi and a couple other motorcycle sites are the extent of my on line presence. I guess that makes me a luddite by current standards.

Posting stupid things one has done for all the world to see is just plain ignorant. I have my office manager screen prospective hires for their on-line profile before making a hire, been surprised by one or two applicants in past couple years.

This story has just made the main 6pm BBC news which is unusual so must be a big deal.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-nottinghamshire-44898534/biker-jailed-after-filming-himself-riding-at-189mph

When you watch youtube vids filmed in the UK (maybe the same  in other countries) the smart guys fuzz out the speedo reading to avoid prosecution.
The idiot doing 189mph must have thought in his own little brain that  police or interested parties wouldn't  be watching when he posted online, not too clever for sure.

I should video myself doing stunts on the K75. The speedo hasn't worked for years.

"Sorry, officer, the speedometer clearly shows I'm not even moving in these shots. Actually, these were all shot in my garage against a green screen and then digitally composited. No, I did not replace the audio with a recording of a sewing machine; that is what the bike really sounds like."

The idiot doing 189mph must have thought in his own little brain that  police or interested parties wouldn't  be watching when he posted online, not too clever for sure.

Years ago when they passed a law in Virginia about how high your pickup truck could be "jacked up" and be legal, there was a local boy who bragged that he wasn't going to lower his to the limit.

He found that violation of the law was an "Equipment Violation" and was a $15 fine and no points on your license.   So he just paid the tickets.

One day he's going down US501, sees a cop behind him, makes sure he's going 55 but while he was looking, his left wheels covered the center double yellow.   That's "Failure to Maintain Control" and "Driving in the Opposing Traffic Lane", which was a 10-point Reckless Driving ticket.

Two days later, he's coming into Rustburg where the speed limit goes from 55 to 25 all in one bite.   He was caught on radar going 46 as he slowed and went by the 25 MPH sign.    That's "20 MPH Over the Limit", another Reckless Driving charge, 10 more points and they took his license.    The judge didn't give it back for 6 months.

The cops are human too.   If you laugh at them and mock their ability to do their job, you're not going to win ....

Cops used to gentlemen. I passed  the Florida H.P. clocked at 118. He offered me a choice.  A night in jail and visit with the judge, or to  be written up for 95, uncontested. . You know what I  decided....

I watched the video.
He was fast, but I doubt 189 fast, I don't care what the speedo showed.
Now I wonder how they identified him, with full face helmet and all.
Maybe it's different over there.

I'm just surprised you can find a road long enough in the UK to do 189mph without running off the end of the island. :thumb:

(/quote]

With the typical 7% speedometer error rate of motorcycles, he was probably in the 175 true speed range.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

Having earlier called the subject of the discussion an idiot I remembered my own stupidity.

Near my home there is a long stretch of dual carriageway with no buildings etc with a downhill gradient, ideal for speed testing.
Many years ago I was doing 130mph along said road and passed a truck in a lay-by which was hiding a cop car.
I saw the cop car had pulled out with all lights blazing and made a decision to make a run for it knowing there was a turn off for a country road about a mile away.
I knew the country road well and along it someway my friend kept a pub which I headed for at silly speeds. Once at the pub I quickly hid the bike round the back, hid my leathers and helmet and stood at the bar trying to look innocent and hoped I had lost the police.
After sometime no cars or helicopters appeared so I sneaked home praying the police did not get my licence number and were waiting at the house for me, which they weren't.

I am not proud of my actions but sometime in our lives most have done something stupid  I guess.

When I was young I often rode my BMW R-26 at 120.  My friends called me a liar but I wasn't.
My R26 had a European speedo graduated in Kilometers.

A person who turned 21 in the new millennium is a millennial.   The 21st Century came about 18 years ago, so the oldest mellenials are about 39 years old.

Wow . I watched a documentary discussing the labeling of generations , the Baby Boom generation has been broken into two groups now , the latter part being referred to as the Jones generation . Guess that makes me an upper limit Joneser  I always thought of the Millenials as being born after 2000 , guess I need to keep up better .
