V7II rapid MGCT light and power loss
« on: February 19, 2018, 04:30:58 PM »
Hello all,

A strange occurrence on my way home tonight on my 2015 V7II.   About 1/2 mile from home the MGCT/traction light started flashing very rapidly, and the engine completely lost almost all (but not all) power.   I had to downshift to first gear and pootle home; engine would not rev above about 2000rpm.

Prior to this happening I felt like the clutch may have been slipping, or maybe the engine was just refusing to rev above about 3-4k rpm; I couldn't tell which, and it only last about 20 seconds before the more drastic situation above.

Pulled into the drive and noticed a bit of smoke as well, but not a tremendous amount and it only lasted a few seconds so I couldn't see where it was coming from once I turned the engine off.    Presently pitch black outside so a closer look will need to wait until the morning.

There were no other warnings, e.g. oil pressure light or anything else.   I can't seem to find any reference in the manuals or online describing this situation.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Make sure the brakes aren't binding. The traction control will pick it up and hold the engine back. I have provoked my V711 to do just that. If all seems well when you inspect it you may have to reset the traction control. I have reset mine after a tyre change. Look in the owners manual for instructions.

Indicator light for Traction Control, lets you know if it's on or off or trouble. That would be the flashing I think. Seems like it goes to limp mode if trouble occurs.
Service manual covers it, just read & learn.

I went outside this morning to have a look, and the answer was obvious.   Rear tyre is flat (small puncture), which must have happened on the way home and has displeased the traction control system.

That is EXACTLY what mine did when I got a screw in the back tire of my Special with tube type wheels on. I also thought something was amiss in the engine. Kind of a safety feature in forcing me to slow down, I guess. I since have put Stone cast wheels on.

actually, while I'm not a fan of the traction control system in general (you want me to press the starter button while it is running to do what?) that feature is rather handy.  I'd much rather find out I have a tire going flat at 10MPH than at 75MPH.

Indeed.  I was going along a rural road in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of 90 degree bends.   If I had gone around one of those too fast I could have ended up with .... well two flats at least.

Same thing has happened to me as well. However, I was dumb enough to assume the unit was malfunctioning, turn it off and ride another fifty miles or so before I gathered my rear tire was low on air due to a screw being embedded in it.
