if you've never ridden a moped they are actually a lot of fun.  My first bike bought at the age of like 12 was an engine-over-the-front-wheel Solex.  The thing was a marvel: had a quart sized gas tank. got something like 200 MPG (~50 miles per quart) and could be fixed with the little tool kit under the rear rack.  Long before I was able to drive I took that thing everywhere including 100 mile plus trips into the countryside.  There is a certain charm to traveling at 20 MPH, that is, unless you come across a farm dog that travels at 25MPH....

'come to think of it maybe that's what the greying motorcycle market needs, not 300cc sport or adventure bikes but 50cc starter mopeds.   I bought a beat up Solex a few years back & retored it as a winter project.  By spring my kids and the kids in the neighborhood were fighting over who got to ride it next.  A inexpensive motor-assist bike might be the thing that brings new riders in, sort of like V7's are the gateway drug for all thing Guzzi.

Good one! :thumb:

Some time back, I was riding the Norge I had at the time down a dirt road at a slow pace. An embankment rose up from the road about 5 feet with a hedge row along the boarder. I noticed a Great Dane looking at me over the hedge. Having had a Great Dane, I am familiar with their usually good nature and didn't worry too much about it. (Besides, mine could keep up with me going through a field on the 4 wheeler at 40MPH.) He did come out of the yard and chase me a bit but no biggie. I continued on at my maybe 15 miles per hour pace............

A Robin would be a great way to ride along a country road!

I almost bought this vintage,  "original", running, French "SOLEX" when I lived in Aachen, Germany (2004-2005).    I am growing more fond of little "tiddler" bikes, (100cc or smaller), as I get older and morph into Geezer-dom.

The guys on Oahu have modded their 50cc Honda mopeds to do 100mph.  Pretty stupid on 10" weenies.   The cops there got wise to the mods because they can see the aftermarket expansion chambers and bling.

I've been checking out these add-on engines to a bicycle.   :thumb:

Best under 100cc bike ever! plus has dual range transmission, put in low and crawl up any hill or mountain.
I've had mine since 1972.

When I got my first motorized bike I thought I had died and gone to heaven
A 35cc BSA Winged Wheel, it had a 2 speed gearbox and would do 30 MPH, quite a decent design actually.

My Mother's 50cc NSU Quickly would take you anywhere to wanted to go, had lots of fun on that.

At my place in the city I have members of the moped army go by periodically (20-50 somethings on 50cc and under bikes w/o mufflers).  I also have assorted 1% roll by as well. The moped guys always look like they are having more fun.  Anybody can take a 1,000cc+ bike above the ton but cracking 35 on a 49cc bike, that takes some determination.  In my sorted past I have ridden some scary fast bikes but nothing quite matches a Solex doing 40, down hill, with a tail wind, with gas leaking from the carb. Flat out, little bikes are fun!

My father’s next two-wheel related sin, after selling his Guzzi just before I was old enough to ride it, and getting a NSU Quickly, was to sell the Quickly about fifteen years ago without telling me. When I was fifteen, I hated it. At fifty five I’d have loved it.

Green1000S, that first image; the red bike is a work of art. Is it yours? It's stunning.

Yes, it’s the old blue Chiu . I used motor, motor attachments, steering neck (has legit VIN and registration) and  chains from it. Made the tank from old “sheet metal” (remains of Kawa 600 gas Tank) with hammers and made the most of it, including sprockets. (Made of two moped sprockets, Guzzi inner and Motobecane outer, cut and welded on lathe)

it’s filled with old stuff to fool people to believe it’s vintage. I call it 1921 Moto Guzzi Boardtrack Racer. 😂
Chain oiler is from “hit and miss” engine, fire extinguisher cut in half and fitted on frame for 2-stroke oil storage, dump truck yellow headlight (modified to fit 6v light, 1954 Ford oil pump pickup as intake and air filter. And so on.... it was a naughty thought and I had to get it out of my head. 🤪
I feel much better now....

Also I've just acquired a Benelli! Albeit a Chinese built one, but the plus side is it uses a clone for the Yamaha Jog 2 stroke, so lots of performance parts for next to nothing  :thumb:

You know Yamaha is Japanese, right?  I built my HD Recon with a Harley engine and transmission.  The rest of the American parts were junk.

Yep, I said a clone of the Yamaha engine ;) It's a very common engine used by many makes in China, and sold all over the world

My mate rang yesterday to see if I was interested bin doing the Vintage car Club scooter run on the 5th. i know he will have his 98cc Norman going, don't know what I will be on. H does have a couple of NSU Quicklys. One is a "sport" which has been fitted with a Honda 50 motor. That might be fun.

Either way, it is a guaranteed relaxed day. Better throw in half a dozen plugs also.
