I have seen  a 03 EV's lower fork stem crack, one crack to the right, one crack to the left.
Please check your California, and let me know on this post.
Also, please note the week and year, paint-stamped on the underside of the part.

This topic was brought to the attention of the Piaggio people at the November dealer meeting in Denver by Larry Kline.
He even had at least one sample such as this with him. Piaggio knows about this but time will tell whether anyone will die before they do something.

That's what we are hoping to find out.  I see where you have a 2003 EV.  Did you check it?  what is the paint stamp on it?  Lets just say more than one so far......

hey, how's mr. greenjeans? Grin
seriously, how about some specifics . . . who are "we" and how do they know about the failures?  also is this just a problem with the 03 californias and is there a special date of mfr. to
look for on the part?

My bike is in the shop right now being prepped, I've asked them to check it for me. Bummer. Looks like a manufacturing defect rather than  a road use failure. I wonder if the Captain has contacted Piaggio with the problem? Seems to me a photo of the failed part might get someone's attention...maybe. Could be a poor casting, or improper fit of the insert. Either way it could be serious trouble if the unit catastrophically failed on the road. Not what I wanted to see that's for sure.

Can someone explain exactly where this is? Is it the underside of the fork head or the fork base. I have a 2003 touring. If it's the part I think it is, mine says 05 03. No cracks.

Yeah, the underside.  Mine's fine on the '02.  Lusky it doesn't seem to affect my year?  Who noticed this?  It's not a part of the bike I would normally check out, being kind of hidden and all.

I'm wondering if that sleeve is pressed in or part of the original casting.  In the picture, the sleeve is cracked as well.  This being the case, there is more here than a manufacturing defect.  Something exerted enough force to crack the sleeve and follow into the casting.  If the sleeve is not a separate piece then my theory is bunk.

It sure looks to be a pressed sleeve to me and it would appear to be a manufacturing defect. It's as though the insert was a tad oversized and stressed the casting to the point of fracture.  Evidently Pete's '03 EV only has 2,000 mile on it and the part is damaged.

Well it's certainly more than '03 Ev's as I'm looking at a '04 stone with the concern as well
but i guess '03 is the build date on the part (26 03)

In known cases so far it has only the 35 02 stamped part. This info coming  in is very enlightening.
The alloy part is a forging, the steel stem has not been shown to have any cracks or flaws.
An engineering investigation may reveal the cause. One is underway at this time.
details to follow as they develop. Please go check ALL late model Californias, this may be bigger than expected.

Do the first two numbers represent the week of manufacture for the cast piece or the assembly of the bike?  Mine would have been in early November '03 which coincides with what I remember the build date of the bike was.  I actually have the factory invoice for her in the garage somewhere.  Perhaps there was a range where discontent in the machine shop produced excessive inteference for the fit of the stem?

Well, it's pretty obvious that either the bushing was too big in diameter, or the casting was bored too small.  Roll Eyes

5 gal. bucket on luggage rack bungied to backrest works for bait and misc.  Cover is good idea.  On my old Cal III my two rod holders were between the Givi Bags and rear fender.  Hardly noticeable when the rods weren't sticking up. Trying to figure out where to put them on the new EV. Riding the Guzzi to go fishing always makes for a double-great day! Grin
