What do you all think about this?  The seller claims they got the bike in the inventory of a failed dealer, but they have no paperwork for it.  The description makes it sound as though the bike is in for repairs, not for sale.  People are bidding on it anyway.

We got a similar machine in at our dealership, for which we could not get a title. It was apparently one of the "flood bikes" as there's a huge mass of silt inside the tank. It took a different gas tank, new pump, and several filter changes to get it running properly. Other than that, it was in good shape inside and out (it needed the cam recall, so we were inside of it). It was sold without title and is now running around titled as a 1975 850-T3. Consider the possibility that this is one of those flood bikes and budget accordingly.

These words were posted under my real name, not my employer's name. They reflect solely my opinions, rather than those of my employer (though why anyone would assume my words were the opinion of my unnamed employer is entirely beyond me). Is that clear?

Greg, you may be on to something...the speedo pic is out of focus, it's hard to see if there is dirt inside. Funny how every other pics are clear, he's holding it probably to avoid flash glare but... you just don't know.

By the way the speedometer looks, I bet it is a "flood bike"...I wonder why it does not have a title, though, wouldnt a flood bike have a salvage title? Rick

looks too clean to be a flood bike.. guess you could ask if any silt is showing.. any buyers keep in mind those are the tube type rims.
and why would you have the headlight off?

I sent an email asking what the license, VIN and registered owner is.  No response.

Yep, if I were thinking of buying this without title I would want the VIN ahead of time.  It would be well worth $20 to run a VIN check to make sure it wasn't stolen or otherwise at risk.

What I'd worry about is the guy who wanders in two weeks from now wanting his bike back.

I was forced to leave my '68 BSA at a shop in Missoula after it parted company with a conn rod.  I called them weekly to check on it (I was in Yellowstone), and it was always in progress.  When I finally had a vehicle to pick it up with they pretended to not know anything about me or my rig.  I saw parts of it (the chrome tank with red badge and the case with the busted rod hanging out) in the back of the shop, but they wouldn't let me examine it.  The short end of the story is that they'd spent the summer parting it out.

I would have definitely called a cop then and there before I left the shop.

Even if called, the police may not have acted.  It wouldn't be theft, but embezzlement.  The loss would be the basis for a civil court action, rather than criminal court.

At the least they would have documented evidence and started a paper trail.  If they did it once they did it other times, the more cases the stronger it is.  Besides, you can go to jail for embezzlement, that's more than civil.

If you look at the sellers store, it's a bunch of scooter stuff, and a rat BMW.  Where is the other stuff from dealership?
