V1000-G5...who has one?
« on: December 14, 2011, 05:31:41 AM »
It seems like the G5 gets no love.  I've wanted one for a while and I'm curious why so few people seem to have them.  Are they relatively rare or do they posess flaws I'm not aware of?  I probably see a dozen SP's for every one G5 on Craigslist and Ebay.  A G5 set up exactly like the one below with a set of floorboards would meet my current Guzzi needs perfectly.

One of my buddies has one. Escentially, it is a convert with a manual transmission. He loves it. No complaints and he says it is comfortable. He usually takes that over his SPIII.

love them...upgraded and put in a torque convertor, fluid pump off the cam, radiator to cool it, threw away the 5 speed trans and simplified it to a two speed and floorboards...then I found out they make them like that and called them Converts  I jest...

I think everyone has made them into cafe racers...TOMB had one that went legend, over 200k I think, shipped off to a friend in Canada and resurrected, still running, never apart..

A friend has one... 81, first owner.
It has done about 280 kkm or so... keeps the bike outside, changes the oil every few years, if he remembers to... it just runs and runs and runs.... :)
Cool bike.

rare, some had funky forward pegs instead of floorboards, and some had a tach.

I had an early one ('79 I think), and it was one of the best running Guzzis I've owned.  It had been sort of cafeyed, so was pretty spartan, but very comfortable, fast and steady.  Sold it to a friend and it doesn't get much use these days.

I have one John...  a '79.  A bit of a project.  Bought it on Long Island NY a bit back and it is somewhat of a project.

This is what she looked like when I carted her home...  http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=39582.0

Funny that you mention SP's...  I am changing the hideous, ET head like dash of the much maligned G5 to an SP dash, I have both complete motorcycles.  The G5-SP will sport the Krauser side cases of the G5, upper fairing from an SP which I happen to have as a spare, cast wheels vs wires as I do not like tubes even in the beautiful Borrani rims.

In taking from the SP I will not completely cannibalize the m/c rather just the dash and that part of the harness required and I will have a perfect caf donor to boot.

The finished G5-SP will be comfy with that ample seat of the G5, have weather protection and best of all, be a Roundfin with that famous sweet spot.  To enable heated gear and aux lighting I will install the EME Alternator/Rectifier/Regulator upgrade as well.

I will keep an eye out for a decent rider for you...  ;-T

Best,
Rob

P.S.  I happen to have a T-3 Floor Board model Tonti frame For Sale if anyone is in need of one.  Triple trees included.

Yep, my '80(?) was like that. Had pegs mounted to what would have been the rear set of footboard mounts. Had the tiny little tach that set just back of the big plastic box speedo housing and was driven by a cable snaking up through the steering stem.

One of the nicest, most comfortable Guzzis I've ever had. It came with a Windjammer, KG(?) trunk and some sort of aftermarket "bucket" seat. I bought an 850T just for the Konis and Krausers on it, used those on the G5 as well. Still had a wrecked SP and put those wheels on instead of the spoked ones. Gotta' find of photo of it...

Rob, your G5 find is what got me interested in them in the first place.  I remember when you posted about it.  My intial thought was, "Jesus...I'll bet you could get hepatitus just sitting on that thing."  Then I started reading about them and became intrigued.  There is an older ad for one on the MGNOA classifieds.  The bike is in NY.  I sent an e-mail to the seller two or three days ago but no answer.....

I've only ridden one SP.  Everyone raves about the fairing but it blasted me right in the face.

They are just an SP in different clothes. I have had two SP's and a converted convert all great bikes. The Converted Convert had a windjammer III and a hang 2 king queen saddle, ugly but the most comfortable bike I have had.

A friend has one in LAPD configuration. Still has all the cop switch pods on it. Has the T3 rear rather than the goofy G5 rear cowl piece. Has well over 100k on it.

More like a Convert with a five-speed since it has that speedo housing, stainless fenders and such. They were all pretty much built from the same platform though.

Found some photos of mine, scanned these from prints so I'm not sure how clear they'll be. Top two are how it ended up in the Spring of '92 just before I sold it and the bottom one was how it looked when I bought it for $800 two years earlier.

I've got one now in my shop. Bought it a few months ago - titled and all. Mostly torn down now.

Everyone keeps telling me they are wonderful - "SUPER COMFY".

I hear the sidestand is VERY nice too. That said - that sidestand is HUGE.

It is a heavy beast.

Contrast to my beloved SP? Knees would not hit the fairing on the G5, unless I installed an SP fairing!

I have a complete sport exhaust, and am thinking about doing the bike as a cafe, then selling all the G5 stuff as the sidestand, bars, et al

Don't know right now. I've had some customers who wanted to buy it then have me put it on the road for them. We'll see.

I had one for a few years. I ended up completely renovating and rebuilding it from a standard bike much like the one in your picture to a red/white tart in the full police configuration.

As you can see from the photos, I completely disassembled it, revised and refreshed everything, and then rebuilt it facing the other direction.

In my mind, the early G5 is the most desirable sleeper of all the early Tonti-framed bikes: 1000cc (or 949 if you insist), iron bores instead of chrome, triple disc setup, switchgear a little better than the predecessor Guzzis, lower foot peg position for taller riders, still has the beautiful Borrani wire wheels. Overall, it's robust, versatile, affordable and pretty much unknown, under valued and under appreciated.

If you find one, snap it up!

A recipe for a bargain Guzzi if one is found for sale. Hmmm, I'll have to keep my eye out because I do want a vintage Goose in the garage eventually. This might just be the best way.  ;-T

I know the Borrani's are beautiful but I actually really like the mag wheels on the later ones.  The Harper's solo seat and a set of floorboards would make for an incredibly comfortable layout for me.  I may have to get serious about looking for one after the first of the year.

I've had one (81) for about 10 years and still love it.  I've put on 70,000 miles in that time. Adjusting valves is about a 15 minute job and all the maintenance is typical easy Guzzi.   Buy it and ride!!  I have a Windjammer fairing and Givi bags on mine and normal fuel economy is about 40 mpg.  I'd ride to Cali and back tomorrow.

For that price the dog would be part of a fair deal.
That is a cool bike though, looks like a police model what with the white and black paint and oh-so-comfy solo seat.
I can't stand it! I need another convert/G5!!!!

The G5 is good as is, but makes a great cafe project startpoint. Lemmie know if you decide to convert something to a G5, I have floorboards, controls and a tank - the usual cafe conversion leftovers.

I've had mine for four years or so, is slowly making its way to a cafe conversion.  It's police bars and floorboards have given way to sport bars and Agostini rearsets.  The Mistral exhaust and pod filters is what really wakes the senses.  It now wears four pot calipers all around (still linked) and an older super comfy Rich Maund seat.  It is my daily commuter, dirt, grime and smiles.

NIce looking bike. What happened?

Was riding with a "friend", who was staggered to my right behind me when his throttle stuck full open and he knocked my bike from under me and sent it sliding down the road on it's right side where it then hit a curb and the flipped over and broke everything on the other side!
