Great Moto Guzzi sales figures!
« on: April 10, 2012, 05:42:24 PM »
Just been doing some reading on MG sales.

Moto Guzzi finished 2011 as the fastest growing European motorcycle brand in Australia. Delivering a 37.7% increase in 2011 compared to 2010,

MG credit the V7 range and the Stelvio for the increase. Australias overall motorcycle market grew by three percent in 2011, with 109,034 units retailed.

Compare this to the USA - which has a total motorcycle sales figure in 2011 of 440,899 (0.3% increase).

Given the population of the USA is about 15 times the population in Oz, we seem to punch well above our weight in the motorcycle sales department! Great to see Guzzi doing so well too!

But compare that to Europe where total motorcycle sales in 2011 were 1.7 million units! You can see why we have to wait a little longer for the latest fruit!

Great stats,  but what constitutes "Europe" for those stats,  the EU or??

And are all stats apples to apples I.e. street bikes? Just curious.

Looks promising. Until we start buying more new bikes, and not waiting until they ferment on the showroom floor, the US will play second fiddle to the rest of the world. So put down your corncob pipe and suspenders, and stop waiting for that $2,500 Guzzi, and become the solution.

It's every motorized 2 wheeler Kev. Road, off road, scooters and ATVs.

Not sure about the definition of Europe - I assume the EU. Which mainly excludes Russia I guess. Not a big market I believe.

Asia is the emerging big buying market too, though largely a smaller motorcycle than your typical western unit.

I am genuinely surprised at the comparatively small size of the US market. Especially as A significant proportion would be off road, Japanese or Harleys. Doesn't leave a lot of room for the euro bikes.

While that certainly is nice, total #'s of Guzzis sold year by year would paint a better picture.

If a mfg sold only 1 bike one year, then sold 2 bikes the next year, they could boast a 100% increase in sales and be the fastest growing mfg!

The percentages were probably determined by someone that thinks a bike with less than 150 horsepower is 7/10th's of a bike.

I wonder if Guzzi sold 37.7 motorcycles there

Yeah that's right. Haven't found the manufacturer specific tallies yet. Anecdotally I can say that Guzzi has traditionally been a well established (if slightly oddball) brand downunder for many years. Even in the 90s most magazines had a Guzzi test in them most months.

Kev I'll find the link for you on total US sales.

It is great to hear good results....But answer me this...I searched all over to see how many 90th Anniversary Norge's came to the USA...I have found approximately 12 White and 12 Black...So how many 90th 2011's were made and where are they? Thanks, Steve PM if possible...

Here's a great link on Aussie sales from the Federal Chamber of Australian Automotive Industry.

Our figure of 109067 includes ATVs, so the USA is about 6 times our market. Still looks good for our population.

241 Moto Guzzis were sold in Oz in 2011 vs 175 in 2010. a 37.7% increase.

1597 Ducatis were sold here for the year. 6427 Harleys were sold here in 2011.

Here's the world market according to Piaggio's Financial statements to 31 December 2011. Very interesting. The US is a market expected to remain pretty much stagnant in 2012. Most of the rest of the world (except Europe) shows growth. India and China HUGE emerging markets.

"The world market for two-wheeler motor vehicles (scooters and motorcycles) increased for the second
year running, by nearly 3% compared to 2010, with volumes just under 49 million units.

This growth is mainly due to the Indian market, which reported an increase of +16% over 2010,
exceeding the 13 million mark (13.1 million vehicles sold), and is now close to first place in terms of
market dimensions.

The Peoples Republic of China remains the first market worldwide, despite registering a decrease
compared to 2010 (-13.7%), with 13.8 million units sold.

The Asian area, known as Asean 5, continued to grow, registering an increase of +11.3% (14.5 million units
sold). The main markets in this area grew considerably compared to 2010. In particular, the Indonesian
market increased by +9.9%, with total volumes of more than 8 million items (8.1 million), to become
leader in South East Asia. The steady growth trend in Vietnam continued, with 3.2 million units sold
(+18%). Growth in Thailand was good, with sales up 11.3% over 2010 (more than 2 million units sold).
Malaysia also improved, reporting a +10.9% increase (465 thousand units sold), while the other country
in the Asean 5 area, the Philippines, reported a slight decrease, ending the year with 628 thousand items
sold (-0.3% compared to 2010).

Other Asian area countries (Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand and
Australia) increased the volumes of the previous year, in overall terms, selling nearly 1.3 million units. In
this area, growth on the Taiwanese market continued steadily, with volumes going up by 17.5% (634,000
units sold) compared to 2010.

The North American market is still experiencing a slight recession, recording a loss of 1%, and with
490,000 vehicles sold.

South America continued to grow, driven by the areas main market, Brazil, which recorded a growth of
12.5% and sold more than 2 million vehicles in 2011.

Europe, which is the reference area for the Piaggio Groups operations, continued to struggle, with sales
on the two-wheeler market down 10% compared to 2010 (-7% for the motorcycle segment, and -11%
for the scooter segment). In the scooter segment, the decrease refers to both the over 50cc market
(-10%), and 50cc market (-11%). In the motorcycle segment, sales of over 50cc models were down 7%,
while the trend for 50cc models was more marked, with a 12% decline."

And the summary of Moto Guzzi from the same report. Full 268(!) page report available at the link below!

Moto Guzzi.
In 2011, Moto Guzzi celebrated its 90th anniversary. To mark the occasion, Guzzi World
Days were held in September in Mandello del Lario. More than 20,000 people came to visit the factory,
museum and to see new models, during the three days.
The climax of the event was the inauguration of the monument dedicated to Carlo Guzzi, in the main
square of the town, attended by the local authorities and by Roberto Colaninno, CEO of the Piaggio
Group.
Moto Guzzi presented an exclusive numbered series of the California model, called 90, featuring a
special colour and fittings to celebrate its anniversary.
The anniversary had already been celebrated in style with the launch of the redesigned Stelvio 1200.
Levering the positive trend of the Enduro segment and starting from the basic version launched in 2008,
which is already selling well on markets, Moto Guzzi restyled the Stelvio with a few but important features,
to delight customers even more.
Existing models were also consolidated in 2011: the efforts made recently to improve product quality were
recognised by customers and contributed to the success of the Norge GT_8v, which was unveiled in 2010,
and to the continual rise of the V7, with various versions winning over new Moto Guzzi customers.

Pete, that is a huge part of our frustration. No straight answers.
We get lots of "hands in pockets, looks at ground, kicks pebbles around. mumble-mumble".
In this modern age, I can't believe it is impossible to be told that the US batch of Stelvios will be built the 2nd week of February, ship from Italy the 4th week of Feb. and arrive in US 2nd week of March. 2 weeks in customs, and they should ship to dealer first week of April. I don't think it is too much to ask.
Instead, we are told-- "maybe early May". Grrrr!!
5 of the damn things are pre-sold!! Weather here is heating up, we are losing half of our prime riding season. You were here in August, and know of what I speak.

I find the lack of information and commitment to a delivery date of some sort far more frustrating than even their tendency to announce a model and not bring it to the US for a year. It's got to be completely infuriating for a dealer.

Can't verify, but at an MC event today, a guy today told me that MG sold 421 or so bikes in the US.

If you don't have the product how can you sell it? DUH?  ???

Now they have two of the best sellers they ever had and they just drag their feet in production and delivery. Smart thinking there  Mr. Tommaso Giocoladelli, Chief Executive Officer.
