« on: June 12, 2013, 09:20:51 PM »
So dealers can one of the new trunks (top case) for the Cal 1400 be adapted to fit a California Vintage?

The boxes are readily available. Its the racks that are in short supply.

The box itself comes with its own mounting plate, it is, just to correct what I said in the other post, quickly detatchable. I can see no reason why it couldn't be adapted r fitted to anything. Doing so might require drilling a couple of different holes in the plate and re-locating the bolts to suit the rack it was being put on but really, apart from that? It's a box. No different to a milk crate, just prettier and a lot more expensive!

Velves are very hard to catch and even harder to skin. Crylics are much more common and their skins just drop off......

I have to say that I think the idea of a velvet lined top-box is? Well? A bit weird. I mean who wants the inside of their bike's luggage to look like a downmarket knocking shop?

Fit and finish on the 50 litre box is good. I'm sure the 60 litre will be just as good. 60 litres is HUGE though.

Personally I don't even get the fiberglass/painted top-boxes used by Harley for decades, and Harley was even smart enough to switch from glass to ABS plastic.

That said, whether I wind up with another RK or a Cali 1400 sometime in the future I'll be putting a nice, plain, black, plastic, HB topcase on it in either case.

Actually that's what I use on the Sporty now, and it's kinda fun to watch the confused looks on the faithful when I park it.

Ok not going to spend $1400 but if I sell my HB 45L case and add some $$$ to that I might do the 50L.  Next question Todd does the Metallic black match the paint of a black California Vintage?

That's whats on the Cal Vin currently.  Lots of people think its really cool that you can take it off and use it as a suitcase so easy.....

That's cool, Jackalmike.

Can you take a pic of the HB 40L box adapter on the CalVin's original rack without the HB box, please?

If possible, top, side and bottom views close up and one from the side of the bike (more macro shot). It'll be interesting to see the attachment and how the bike looks without the top box. Thanks heaps!

The adapter is actually the one from my old Jackal that raised the box a couple of inches to clear the backrest.  I have it mounted pretty far back on the Calvin rack so that I can open the hard bag lids fully.  Will try to take some pics tomorrow.

When I flew out east for my Calvin I shipped a old top box off a honda CB550. It was in good shape & I had made a mounting system that I shipped with the box. It fit well & held a full face helmet & had a backrest pad for the wife. You could easily pick up a used box from ebay, have it painted to match & have something cheap that looks good. I hate abs plastic so fiberglass is the way to go for me.

Hi Jackalmike

Thanks so much for the pics. They're very well taken with great detail. I'd use your setup for my top box if I get a CalVin one day.

Sorry for not returning to the thread to thank you earlier. I was just about to buy myself a CalVin when my dad fell ill and the deal had to fall through. The owner was so gracious that he returned me the deposit. I still covet the CalVin! It's got so much character. The 1400 Cali is a sweet ride, but the Calvin just takes the stage.

Cheers!

Mike, One word of possible warning.

I had an adaptor like that attaching the HB topcase to my HB luggage rack on the Jackal (a rack that didn't have the built-in receiver) and I was on the way to a rallye one day when the cross-bar to which it was attached failed. Luckily it was secured slightly differently so that it didn't eject, and I field repaired it using a hose clamps.

But if I were you I'd keep an eye on that rack attachment and possibly consider a secondary system to take some of the stress off and/or make sure it can't fail and eject.
